Mother Mother – Oleander Lyrics 14 years ago
The oleander is a poisonous plant with white, rose or purple flowers. The character says she is like an oleander in the chorus, meaning that she is poisonous. The repetition of the white of the oleander is to emphasize its beauty.

She says she needs outside help. She broke the glass, meaning she she had a nervous breakdown. The other person she alludes to is either a friend or a lover. Either way, this person helped her when she was in trouble. This is where the image of the oleander brings meaning. She sees herself as an oleander to the other. In other word, she poisons her helper's life by being a nuisance. Or at least, that is how she perceives herself. This suggests that this state of mind of being like an oleander is recurrent.

I am not too sure about the part where the man (Ryan) sings. It seems to suggest that the man is the cause of this woman's trouble, as he plays with vile and burned her bible (her belief system). He is like Satan, but she needs him badly. Vice is necessary in her life. Its non presence would kill her. At the same time, this same vice is the cause of her mental breakdown.

At he end of his part, he says, "you tried to cry", then the voice changes to another person's, and it says, "put on a smile". This suggests that a movement away from the man leads to a smile, thus happiness. It can also mean outside help trying to lead her away from this man (probably without much success). In this case, she would be poison to this person trying to help her to get away from the man.

In the end, she remains an oleander, as the song ends on those lyrics. Although she is quite aware of her state, she decides to stick with it and not move towards happiness. If you don't understand why or think this is uncommon, think about women who stay with violent men, children who still love their parent even though they were raped by them, or women/men who stay with lovers who keep cheating on them. The point of this song is not so much to defend the righteousness of this attitude as to state the concequences it has on one's mind, where the person, instead os accusing the aggressor, sees herself as poison to other people.

Kid Cudi – Day 'n' Nite (Nightmare) Lyrics 15 years ago
There is always a first, literal meaning, which is the one you describe. But good lyrics always have more than that, and these lyrics are good. Some books that were written hundreds of years ago are still being debated about what is actually meant, so don't be so easy on interpreting lyrics. So many people overlook important details and fail at getting what is really meant. For my part, I believe Cudi thinks drugs are not the answer, but it's the only answer that makes "sense" to him. You only state what, but you don't state why. See, when you raise different points, it brings people to think more deeply.

Kid Cudi – Pursuit of Happiness (Nightmare) (feat. MGMT & Ratatat) Lyrics 15 years ago
This song is about someone totally lost. He tries to hold on to life, and the only way to hold on is to pursue happiness. However, 'tis clear he is not happy at all, as he repeatedly says, "I'll be fine once I get it [happiness], I'll be good." In other words, now he is not fine, as he does not have happiness; once he gets it, he will be happy and have a "normal" life. In the music video, he's drunk and seems to have used drugs, which is why everything is in slow motion (and this is confirmed at the end when he says, "Oh fuck. Oh my God, why did I drink so much and smoke so much?") This suggests that it is how he pursues happiness (the use of drugs is also present in his music video Day 'n' Night.) This state of being shows him as someone careless about pretty much everything: he drinks and drive (I don't care, hand on the wheel, drivin' drunk, I'm doin' my thing), he has no regrets and does whatever he wants, regardless of what people think, regardless of what happens (people told me slow my roll. I'm screaming out fuck that; Imma do just what I want, lookin' ahead no turnin' back.)

At the end, Kid Cudi is ambiguous in his intended meaning. He says, " Pursuit of happiness, yeah
I don't get it, I'll be good." Does he not get happiness and will be good anyways? This is probably not what he means. What he doesn't get could rather be life, as The Pursuit of Happiness is a life motto after all. Thus, he could be saying that he doesn't get life, but that he'll "try" to be good anyways. If the pursuit of happiness is impossible, what else remains?

The song is not only about him but also about a nation. The Pursuit of Happiness was indeed brought by Thomas Jefferson, who said: "everyone has the right to the pursuit of happiness." He is not alone feeling like this, as this motto represents a whole nation and its ever-standing belief: how important it is to pursue happiness, whatever happens.

Seriously, the lyrics are fucking good. I've felt like this too many times before, and still often feel like this. You're not happy, can't find meaning in life. So you go on a go, use ecstasy, smoke weed, drink alcohol; you're totally stoned, and you drink and drive back home because you don't care about nothing. You could get caught by the police, whatever. You could make a car crash, whatever. What's the point anyways? Then you realize that this evening was pointless, again; you wonder why you've done that whilst you could have done something that really creates results, results that'd bring something good to you; but you don't really believe in that...
