Ingrid Michaelson – Corner of Your Heart Lyrics 11 years ago
monetmarie: That kind of thing is not a fiction. It happens. A self-respecting person would likely not accept so little, and the key there is that there are people who lack self-esteem and self-respect and get caught up in a situation like that. Humans are capable of enduring a lot more unnecessary hell than you think. I spent three whole years in a mentality eerily similar to the one in this song while getting almost nothing in return, thrilled by every small, tiny thing I got and never getting enough and still craving it.

The fact that fiction exists of this sort is exactly why it happens in reality, because fiction affects how people think and it affects how people view things. There is not enough media out there telling people that it isn't romantic to care about somebody and focus your life around them, and that it's not romantic to focus on somebody while getting nothing in return, and there's far too much media doing the opposite.

Whether or not the song is sarcastic, I can't say. The minor key of the song at the very least does not seem to paint it in a positive/romantic light as many things do. But to say that it has to be sarcastic because this can't really happen is absolutely not true.

AFI – Too Shy To Scream Lyrics 13 years ago
I definitely agree. I know exactly what this feels like, and the chorus ("I'd die / If you only met my / Eyes before you pass by / Will you pause and break my heart?") completely describes the feeling I've had before.

If someone means enough to you and you're insecure enough about what you mean to them, so much as an acknowledgment that they know you exist is sometimes enough to set you on an emotional high. And when they don't acknowledge that you exist, it's enough to make you -- as you said -- completely unhappy and miserable.

Thriving Ivory – Twilight Lyrics 14 years ago
I always interpreted that line as a way of the singer asking the other person what their life is like without them and what they're thinking about. He can't be with her, their lives are completely separate now, but he still wants to know about her life. It's like he says in the first verse:

"But I still talk about you, though, and wonder how it is your life will unfold."

They've gone their separate ways, but he still hasn't let go and doesn't want to. That's how I take it, anyway. I'm pretty sure it's at least something along those lines.

Ingrid Michaelson – End of the World Lyrics 14 years ago
She says at the beginning of the "Home Recording" of this song:

"I wrote this song after watching a slew of like, 'Zombie, end-of-the-world' movies, so it's basically about me running from a zombie, with a little romance in there."

(I paraphrased it a bit since the quote was a little choppy.)

Even without that, though, I feel like the meaning's pretty self-evident. It's the end of the world, for whatever reason, and she's talking about the world falling apart, and asking some other person who's important to her if they'll find her as the world is ending, so they can be together when they die.

When I listen to the song, I just sort of think of the entire world falling apart, and just running to find that one person in the world who means everything to me, and just holding each other until the very end. Despite the apocalyptic theme, it's actually a very romantic song, in my opinion.

I don't think we quite got that...want to repost your comment one more time?

But in all seriousness, it is "lie to me," not "enlighten me," it says it in the lyrics booklet for the album. I think it makes sense, too; she's saying that he could say anything to her, even if it's just lies, because all she needs is for him to say something back, to hear his voice.

I know all to well how that feels.

AFI – The Interview Lyrics 14 years ago
It's funny; this has been one of my favorites from Decemberunderground since I got the album years back, but I guess I never really tried to figure out the meaning of it until just now.

I definitely think this song is about a relationship, which is something that didn't occur to me until just now. x3Liz's interpretation is very close to mine, but I feel that it's less of a marriage and more of feelings for someone which are felt by the narrator but are not reciprocated.

"Forever waiting for disaster,
What David calls servant and master
Will you play it too?"

I'm not sure if this is a Depeche Mode reference or not, but I think this is a representation of the fact that the narrator is basically a servant to this other person, because he feels that srongly for them.

"As this displacement begs for water
Swimming, bathing
Drowning in sorrow.
Scream with me."

I take "water" as this relationship -- something that the narrator feels is a necessity -- which works in an ironic twist as something which he desires so much but ultimately serves as being incredibly unhealthy for him.

"I crawl across this cracked expansion
I'll be buried, soon.
Beneath the sand with pure intentions.
Wanting something, someone to follow"

Seems to me that he's talking about how miserable he is without this relationship, and how much he wants to have something/someone significant enough for him to cling onto and follow.

"For a change, I'll refrain
From hiding all of me from you
Here's my lullaby
Pray for rain, lose your name
And watch all your dreams fall through.
Hush now, don't you cry."

This, to me, could either be a big confession or perhaps him simply being more open about himself. Either he confesses how much he wants this relationship, or he simply acts more like himself (although the former seems more likely); either way, he's been too afraid to show any of himself to the other person until now, and once he does...everything falls apart.

"I swoon upon my knees come crashing
Will you bury me?
Today, this small favor I'm asking
Hold me. You may drop me tomorrow."

This shows his true desperation over the situation. He swoons and comes crashing down on his knees; that's how hard he's fallen for this person. I'm not entirely positive the manner in which "Will you bury me?" would be asked, but I get the impression it's more him asking if these feelings he has for this person be the death of him rather than physical burying. And he's so desperate for this relationship to exist that he begs for them to even be there for him for a short time, even if they don't want to stay with him long-term.

"Calm down
Come down, cold resides with me
I flee to decemberunderground.
As you exhale
I breathe in (and sink into)
the waterunderground,
and I'll grow pale without you"

Davey described Decemberunderground as being "a time and a place. It is where the cold can huddle together in darkness and isolation."

That doesn't really change my analysis, but it does seem to confirm it. I'm not actually sure that this is meant literally, but just that he's been rejected, he knows that he can't have this relationship that he needs so much, so he flees into cold, darkness, and isolation, and he's left all alone, to die without the person he wants to be with so badly.

That's my take on it, anyway. Definitely a great song, though. Depressing as hell, but I think the reason it's so depressing is that the lyrics are really well-composed.

Michelle Branch – Tuesday Morning Lyrics 14 years ago
Maybe this is just because I find this easier to relate to in my current situation than the interpretation most others seem to have, but the way I took this song is a sort of retrospective on a relationship. The entire thing is written in the past tense (aside from the "Please don't drive me home tonight" piece), and the way she talks about it comes off to me more as reflecting on and remembering something that's gone rather than going back to the beginning of a relationship.

I feel like she's reflecting on a relationship she had, how happy they were, how their relationship developed and they learned about each other and ultimately, through this relationship, discovered themselves.

The lines "If I had known then / That these things happen / Would they have happened with you?" make me think of her reflecting on where their relationship went wrong, wondering, if she'd known how things would go wrong, could she have prevented it from happening?

I feel like the "Please don't drive me home tonight / 'Cause I don't want to feel alone" piece is their final goodbye; whatever went wrong has gone wrong, their relationship is ending, and he's driving her home. She wishes he wouldn't drive her home, though, because she doesn't want it to end, and she doesn't want to be alone.

That's just my take on the song.

Lady GaGa – Scheiße Lyrics 14 years ago
@rockwitchu: My initial disappointment with the album (it's grown on me considerably just over the last 24 hours) wasn't at all based on an expectation of her staying the same, keeping the exact same genre or anything like that. I listen to a lot of very different music, and genre is entirely irrelevant to me at this point -- and when artists DON'T change I generally find it boring. I'm not one of those people who flips out when an artist they love isn't exactly the same on their new album. My initial disappointment was more that some of the music didn't click with me, it didn't make me feel much of anything, and I didn't feel able to relate to it. I still don't love every song on the album (but I almost never love EVERY song on an album), but through multiple listens I've found the music more enjoyable.

As for the last part, I enjoy references and the like; the problem isn't having to look it up, it's that I like singing along with music and knowing exactly what's being said so I can relate to it and get more out of it. Even once I've looked it up, my memory isn't good enough to retain it as much as I'd like.

Agreed with Eatcarpet, it has a cheesy '80s feel to it but it's impressed me more than most of the songs on Born This Way so far.

But, are there any fans of her unreleased song "Then You'd Love Me" here?

No, I just can't seem to forget you,
No I can't for just as long as I met you,
You're my babe right through,
I was made for you

When that part started I knew I recognized it, and then I remembered and realized that she took that part (and modified it slightly) from "Then You'd Love Me". Pretty cool actually.

Agreed with raiseyourvoice. I'm a big Gaga fan but there are times when this whole "Mother Monster / Little Monster" thing in combination with the extent to which people take their fandom creeps me out, and almost makes me hesitant to say that I'm a Gaga fan lest I be thrown in with that same crowd. Yeah her music is great, but not everyone's going to like every piece of her music, just like any other artist out there.

Haven't gotten all the way through the album myself yet, but I agree with Elzbieta to some extent. It's not bad, per se, but parts of the album feel really strange just for the sake of being outlandish. The multiple languages thing is kind of interesting, but when half of the album is in a foreign language it starts to feel stale and it detracts from my experience. I find music much more enjoyable when I can understand what's being said without having to look it up.

This song is absolutely amazing. It's been my favorite off of Futures ever since I got the album many years ago. I wholly related to this song back when I had my first crush in middle school, and I can relate to it even more strongly now.

I have strong feelings, but I'm nervous as hell...no matter how much I want to say something, I can't. I know I probably should just let go...but I just can't bring myself to do it. It all comes back to that last chorus:

I can't help it baby
This is who I am
Sorry but I can't just go turn off how I feel

Truer words were never spoken. People may frown upon me feeling the way I do, people may not like it, even the person for whom I have feelings might not like it if I were to tell them...but I can't just turn off how I feel. You never can.

Lady GaGa – Born This Way Lyrics 15 years ago
@rowkem: I definitely heard it as "Him", not "HIM" -- I suppose we'll likely find out when she releases the album, assuming there are lyrics in the booklet. I do disagree that she shouldn't have mentioned God at all, though. I don't personally believe in God either, but I see that less as calling out the evangelicals and more as assuring the people who are put down by said evangelicals and told there's something wrong with them. Evangelicals will be evangelicals, but I think her message is that you shouldn't feel like there's something wrong with you.

I agree on the quality of the song, too. It isn't her best work, and the lyrics aren't complicated at all, but they're good for a pick-me-up and there's a nice beat to it, and hopefully the rest of the album will surpass it. If "You and I" is any indicator, it seems that it certainly could.

@Clockmarks: Orient isn't necessarily a racial slur, but it's considered politically incorrect. From what I can gather, it's because you're only supposed to refer to inanimate objects as that, but I don't fully understand the reasoning.

I don't really see the huge issue with it, though. Especially considering that the message of the song is that you're perfect just the way you are, it clearly isn't supposed to be derogatory.

I don't know, I always liked this song...funny that so many people dislike it.

The lyrics aren't the deepest in the world, but overall it has a positive message and it's good for listening to when you're not going to let anyone bring you down or control you, so I like it.

AFI – It Was Mine Lyrics 15 years ago
I have to agree completely. I can't listen to this song without thinking of 1984.

For me, it brings to mind most vividly the scene in which Julia and Winston are together and the Thought Police come to arrest them, especially in the lines "Hold me closely now but don't, don't say anything/They've come to take me away/And won't leave until I'm gone".

I'm not sure if the song was written with the intention of having that connection, but I definitely see one, purposeful or not.
