jadedcross- i'd like to elaborate my thoughts on the entire album with you for i feel many of you are getting it twisted. it is not so much about "anti-christianity" but more so about the outlook on all relgions in general. in my opinion religion is a base of government reform. though many churches do dedicate themselves to god only individuals who have discovered their soul beyond the body and mind can truly know who god actually is. that being said i have to highlight my concern on the meaning of this particular song... this sounds like the acceptance of the higher power into the path of a soul. or more so the REALIZATION of their souls connectedness to our HIGHER POWER. but the funny thing about this album is that it is very vigorous about describing the ignorance of it all. anyways, i feel he is battling his own self with contradictions such as the phrase: "To places he can only hide in other peoples minds....Your rational mind's insane Taste the sound you make" "he" referring to our higher power and "your" as in us the irrational benders of our rationality. it's true, we are all insane until we discover what sanity is but you see how anthony is describing it as such an ignorant occurence because he feels we are rational yet insane. and god can only reach the deepest of our thoughts burried through all the insanity of our thoughts. in less terms my thoughts on the album are this: it is the acceptance of a non-religious/non-biblical existence of our creator and the parallel realm beyond, what we THINK is reality yet being torn between ignorance and faith. should we accept this or be as we are because it is much simpler to understand? you decide. |

i think its a seductive story....if it is indeed a story. which i find a little hard to process. as i break the song down while i listen to the beat its more of a her being a bad ass telling her man down boy down....no? i mean its the simplicity of her words that make me feel like she hasnt much to say about the matter, that it is what it is and they need to get over it, "count me down" check me off kind of thing? like she's checking him off her list. whether it'd be an intimate connection between her and another/particular person, or the person and her friend, or her and her persons friend. i see her more as the seductress who feels bad but keeps doing what she loves, but doesnt want to split anyone up: friends, girlfriends, etc. she just wants boys boys boys [a girls ridiculous toy]....get it? xoxocaro |

"In case it gets away from us" i agree with tootlers. i too believe it refers to the teachings of god. "Don't pull it close," seems as though anthony knew of God's teaching even spiritually rather than just the externally driven view by the human race and with that being said he might not be too supportive of those who seek this revelation. "the damage revealed the cost And it wasn't worth it, but they'll never know" usually, those who arent believers all their lives hit rock bottom and once they reach the lowest point of THEIR life is when they come to a "religious" realization. which is partially why i believe that this line has to do with the cost of those who don't believe in a higher power. i'm not exactly stating that all people come to this kind of realization but those who do, know the damage it does through out life and the emotional demons we need to fight for god to find us capable of receiving his teachings and with that, give us wisdom to succeed. from personal experience i understand this line very well. the damage that reveals the cost would be the damage that you do to yourself without thinking it could cost you your life (i.e. worldly temptations and what your willing to do to fulfill your needs). anthony seems very displeased at the cost and is sure that it's not worth it. and as for "they'll never know" well, most people wont ever know. "To keep in mind the line that separates idols" in continuation to what i had stated above, people wont ever know how to separate the idols (i.e. celebrities, rather than god) from their minds. from what i deciphered i see it to be the separation of body and soul. drawing a line between your [sub]conscious mind/soul with your flesh and worldly self. ('idols' as in YOU and the WAYS OF THE WORLD, but that is just a little bit more of MY personal view rather than my general perspective of this song). "If the world is a dream and nothing is worth it" this line proves my theory in my beliefs a little more. i think of this life to be part of a conscious and unconscious universe. what we are in our minds when we are asleep, and when awake, how we take things in during the light of the day. i believe this life to be more than what we think it is. deeper than solid ground and skyscrapers and beyond our minds capability to believe. unless, you give your mind the capability to do so. with the knowledge of "beyond" it would be better to say that i am on this planet to become wise, kind, and know of good and evil so that when i pass i can become a spirit with God to fight the evils on earth for the living to be easier off until god decides to come down again. i think of god as a spiritual guide who created us. imagine when you wake up how the light hits your face....and god said let there be light? he woke up himself. being the only ALL knowing spirit who was able to create us. IN HIS IMAGE. but i digress [overboard lol]. to me, anthony seems to be disappointed with his realization, and he finds it to not be worth it because, though he knows of the existence of this higher power and the capabilities of his mind, he doesnt feel it to be worthy because he classified it as just "a dream." though his idea is on the right path (his mind), his heart isnt there yet. "Unless you have a god. (We're all going to hell)" pretty self-explanatory. he's pissed that he needs one. "But we wont be saved we'll live as slaves to love What god takes away, let's refill all your holes with mud Purchase your tickets; I'm kicking your crosses down" this verse is a little uneasy. makes me a bit angry, yet sad that he is so bitter towards the whole revelation. as if it were more of a burden to him rather than a gift. he is convinced that we can beat this on earth and is certain that love is the only thing we'll ever fight for. (seeing as it is the only way a person feels worth something). "what god takes...with mud" is a rough line, he is basically going against all his beliefs to refill the damages of gods teachings. [note: god is responsible for ALL good things and the devil is responsible for all bad things. whether you believe it or not is entirely up to you as well as crucial to ignore]. i have also come to the conclusion that he is desperately in need of real proof. the kind you can physically see and im afraid god only works in mysterious ways. as for "purchase your....crosses down" well, he is leaving those who believe to believe and he'll be kicking the crosses down. "And all the voices sound just like you 'I'll be there- Breathe in-'" when he says 'voices' i believe he means his thoughts that are channeled by god to your soul (you may think its crazy but im not the only one) that is considered to be your conscious. what tells you right from wrong and your way of comforting yourself when youre down. "breath in...ill be there" deep shit. It's been so long (I've felt so wrong again) I fixed myself up nice but you never came he feels god is ignoring him and his efforts but god is always there to reward our hard work in remarkable ways. when you lose your faith is when the devil has a hold of you. in doubt you will meet the devil. "The words rolled off our backs and sound the same I'll be waiting- I hope that it's worth it but I'll never know" need i say more? |

^thank GOD^ i was about to punch a baby. look, every soulful person would not condemn the everyday person for "stealing" music. i find it ridiculous that money even exists [especially when it comes to EDUCATION and artistic wisdom] but i digress. if thom yorke really has a problem with this than radiohead doesnt stand for what i thought it did. and everything they ever wrote and sang about has been contradicted with this song. and if you truly believe that that's what this song is about then you need to find a different way to interpret songs or just seize now before you lead yourself astray. magpies are birds believed to be one of the most intelligent of all animals. It has been one of a rare few animals to recognize itself in a mirror test. the song is about recognition. identifying. etc... simple. like thom yorke likes it. |

call me crazy, but i feel this song is directed to closer in a[ny] relationship. "And take a little walk when the worst is to come When I saw you looking like I never thought And say you're at a loss or forgot that words can do more than harm" seems like there were still some things left unsaid. maybe this couple had not seen each other. perhaps had a conflict and separated before the end of it all; hence, "and take a little walk when the worst is to come." then they see each other again. he probably never thought he'd see her so sad or distraught when he said "when i saw you looking like i never thought"....the next line is pretty self explanatory; as in, she does not know what to say but to just accept the loss and exchanging words would just hurt more. "The town is gonna talk, but these people do not See things through to the very minimal But what's it gonna cost to be gone? If we see you like I hoped we never would" they most likely are referring to a serious relationship, or one that was becoming very serious seeing as he is talking about a town talking, gossiping about them but also adds that they would not understand because they see things from the outside, (everyone knows that relationships are hectic but they've been given the impression of what it should "look" like, but know one knows the external truths of them) which is what i got from "people do not see things through to the very minimal." he asks what the cost of all this will be when she is gone. i think he is kind of at a crossroads with this last line. as if he were considering to try again but then realizes how much they've both hurt each other already. "if we see you like i hoped we never would" this line is very interesting. he speaks in generality when he says "if WE see you..." then finishes with "like I hoped we never would" so perhaps he thinks that the relationship has done her no real good, that other people had known she was unhappy and never really supported the relationship in the first place; he had hopes that they were wrong. "So take it as a song or a lesson to learn And sometime soon be better than you were If you say you're gonna go, then be careful And watch how you treat every living soul" this verse doesnt need much explaining. "so take it as a song or a lesson to learn." he wants her to learn from the mistakes of the ended relationship. to take it as a song to listen to for guidance, maybe? "and sometime soon be better as you were" pretty much asks her to better herself in the world and if she leaves to be careful. to watch how she treats everyone. this tells me a lot about the person he is talking about. maybe she was a bit immature, or possibly bitter in some ways when it came to him, because he seems to care very much about her and see's she needs some change in her life. "My eyes can't look at you any other way, Any other way, any other way" he loves her, and the only way he would see her as is his love. no room for a real friendship or anything of that nature unless its romantic. he knows her as his companion and a lover to him. i hope this makes sense to all of you :) xoxo caro |
