I think this is a song about a dying lover. "Change colors" referring to the color of the leaves from season to season. "I knew you when you were green and strong." Referring to her being full of life in the summer, green like the leaves.
"I see you hesitate to fall now, But it's a pretty good view from down here, too." Hesitating to transition to autumn's colours, and fall from her tree. Slowly descending to her death. This part of the song seems to explain that he is taking every step with her, and trying to comfort her about death.
