The world is messed up and unfair. It can be changed, but only if enough of us speak up and try to change it. It's meant to unite people who share the belief that no human life is above another, especially regarding the great divide of rich / poor. I'm not sure why some people feel it necessary to write entire novels on this one. |

"Losing My Religion" is an expression Stipe's grandmother used to use, apparently. It's like saying you're at you're wits end, or going to explode. If someone is so angry that they can't stop swearing and shouting, for example, they are losing their religion. Also this: Stipe to Rolling Stone magazine: "I wanted to write a classic obsession song. So I did." Stipe has also said it's about "unrequited love" where all actions and words of the one you obsess over are dismantled for hidden meaning and desperately hopeful signs. "I thought that I heard you laughing, I thought that I heard you sing. I think I thought I saw you try." |

It's quite simply about someone old dying deciding that it's time to die, in fact trying to die. The body does all it can to keep itself alive and so trying not to breathe is a very scary thing to have to do. However, this person has lived a long life, has a loved one by their side and is letting them know that they will die in peace knowing that they will be remembered. The act of that person remembering the dead, and visiting the grave to keep the memory alive will give the spirit reason to fly over it. The living continuing to love and remember the departed will give the soul "something to breathe", and in that sense they will never truly die. |
