i forget who said it that made the meaning kinda click with me, but here's my interpretation. you know how cutters are all like "oh, no one loves me, i'm going to cut, it'll get someone's attention, they'll care, they'll love me." <--- that was kinda my thought process sometimes when i cut. well, all they're doing is thinking that cutting will make someone love them. they're faking this pain they feel to get someone's love and affection. "love is not like anything, especially a fucking knife" to me, that's reason speaking. it's like "what the fuck are you doing? this isn't going to bring you love. it'll only bring you something fake." that's my interpretation for the beginning part. the rest of the song, to me, is kinda about how one tries to fit into society. like, say the first part is reason speaking, the rest of the song is about how one tries to reconform to society so they don't feel like a walking target. everyone knows that nowadays, if people are trying to get a job or walk the street and not be damned by every glare of an upper crust snob, they have to dress a specific way, make sure their tattoos are easy to hide and piercings aren't flaunted off. the person is going to feel like a fake, but now it's because they're hiding the parts of them they feel define themselves. i hope that makes at least some sense...it sounded a lot better in my head |

i agree with your second theory. he feels emasculated. he's the one in the dress, the one selling his ass, maybe? or it's just a hyperbole. like "she" might want to be with him but wants him to only want her. he feels her desire for monogomy is stupid, but he can't help but what to make her happy. he's allowing her to control him because he wants her. "whoring" himself to her different ways of doing things. he wants somebody to save the side of him everyone knows because that's the side of him that has gotten him where he is now. also the song sounds "funny" because he probably feels funny. feels out of sorts. just my theory. |

i agree with what you think the song is about. the part you said you're unsure of how it fits, the "You'll have to pay to watch me die" line could be seen as she'll pay with her sanity. think about it, if your loved one killed themself in front of you, you'd probably go crazy and wonder what you could have done to fix it or save them. and if they meant a lot to you, the image of them killing themself would be forever burned into your mind. everytime you'd close your eyes, you'd see it and feel more like shit. ya know? just an idea i guess. |
