I think this song is about a pope during the middle ages that sells favors to people in order to get to heaven. In the beginning verse the guy had never touched real power and I believe sells his soul to gain that. When he becomes the Pope he sells indulgences to gain wealth and more power - remember at this time the Pope was probably the most powerful person on earth. This person is selling out others for his own benefit, but at the same time fears death creeping in on him to collect on his promise, but does not want this to end. |

This was about Maverick in the movie Top Gun but Judas Priest backed out of the soundtrack at the last minute because they felt the movie would flop. Great song and truly underappreciated, think about all the love this would get had it stayed on the movie soundtrack! |

I believe this song can have 2 meanings. The easiest would be drugs, but the other idea seems based on music itself. Many people feel that creating music is very calming and relaxing, even when you don't have a direction. "We thought we were lost...everyone was in peace of mind." Tensions vanishing can translate to the healing some people feel from music as well. The 4th stanza seems pretty clear to be about music itself as well and how it can free your mind; also says that music is universal. The last part almost seems like a challenge. The band made it through hard work with their music and you're welcome to join them if you can harness or control your music/sound. |
