Death Cab for Cutie – The Sound of Settling Lyrics 13 years ago
"...That my tongue was tied off
My brain's repeating
"If you've got an impulse let it out"
But they never make it past my mouth...

...Of every love that could've been
If I'd only thought of something
Charming to say..."
This song, to me, is about the inability to properly convey our thoughts at the times we most desperately need to: when faced with embarrassment and nervousness. This makes the "ba-ba"s placeholders not only for the melody, but also for words the narrator of the song can't seem to formulate.

"Our youth is fleeting
Old age is just around the bend
And I can't wait to go gray"
Age supposedly brings wiseness. With wisness one typically feels more comfortable expressing ideas and thoughts. Age also brings self confidence, something the narrator is lacking; he can't wait to feel such a thing.

"I've got a hunger
Twisting my stomach into knots"
The narrator wants to convey their thoughts so horribly that it's eating away at them like hunger. The desire to speak for themselves has become so overwhelming that it's more of a need than a desire. However, every time the narrator attempts to talk about their feelings and thoughts, they find themselves unable to due to nervousness.

"This is the sound of settling"
The sound of settling is just that, the sound of someone attempting to fund a way convey an idea and failing, thus settling for silence.

"Ba-ba
This is the sound of settling
Ba-ba, ba-ba"
I believe "ba-ba" in this is the literal sound of settling: it's your heart pounding in your chest as you grasp madly for words that just won't come.

I really like this song. The melody is catchy, far too easy to get stuck in your head. The message I think it conveys is beautiful, even though it is a rather dismal outlook and offers no solution other than just a quiet sort of acceptance.

"I've got a hunger
Twisting my stomach into knots
That my tongue was tied off
My brain's repeating
"If you've got an impulse let it out"
But they never make it past my mouth"
On a completely unrelated note: is it just me, or is anyone else more than just a little vaguely reminded of JtHM with that?
