I've been thinking about this, and here's my thought. Depression is not about sadness so much, as it is about the inability to feel anything anymore except despair. It's about shutting down from the world, turning off. Billy stated during this period he was extremely depressed, and that there was a part of himself, an old version of himself, that was hurting him. He said he had to kill that part off, in order to move on. To me, that's how the video progresses. It begins with him depressed as he is with everyone else around in the ecstasy of life. Then he lets go of his old ways (abandons his job, ditches his uniform, paints the van). Until finally in the end, even the "modified van" takes off without him. So he's not just built changes on his old way of life, he's broken from it completely. So before, he was depressed and suicidal, shutting down from life and turning off. But then he went through a kind of metamorphosis and turned on again. And I think he is intimating, to all the people out there who might be depressed and suicidal, that he wants to turn you on too. i.e. now that he's found a way to save himself, he wants to share this knowledge and save you too. Just an educated guess. |
