The lyrics are STILL wrong... Rosemary, heaven restores you in life You're coming with me Through the aging, the fearing, the strife It's the smiling on the package It's the faces in the sand It's the thought that moves you upwards Embracing me with two hands Right will take you places Yeah, maybe to the beach When your friends they do come crying Tell them now your pleasure's set upon slow release Hey wait Great smile Sensitive to fate, not Denial But, hey, who's on trial? It took a life span with no cellmate The long way back Sandy, why can't we look the other way? We speaks about travel Yeah, we think about the land We smart like all peoples Feeling real tan I could take you places Do you need a new man? Wipe the pollen from the faces Make revision to a dream while you wait in the van It took a life span with no cellmate To find the long way back Sandy, why can't we look the other way? You're weightless; you are exotic You need something for which to care Sandy, why can't we look the other way? Leave some shards under the belly Lay some grease inside my hand It's a sentimental jury And the makings of a good plan You've come to love me lightly Yeah, you come to hold me tight Is this motion everlasting Or do shudders pass in the night? Rosemary, oh, heaven restores you in life It spent a life span with no cellmate The long way back Sandy, why can't we look the other way? You're weightless, semi-erotic You need someone to take you there Sandy, why can't we look the other way? Why can't we just play the other game? Why can't we just look the other way? |

| Modest Mouse – All Night Diner Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
Here's the link to the Triple X website: www.triplexrootbeer.com/ I couldn't find any reference to Modest Mouse on the website :( I guess it's not the kind of story with which they would like to be affiliated ahaha. The Wikipedia article about Triple X root beer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triple_XXX) mentions the song and quotes three lines, though. Eeeheehee when I heard this song I thought it was about a brothel :D But the actual Triple X diner makes a lot more sense. Hear me out: "Have I told you? You could really get it on!" Pretty self-explanatory. "All-night diner" It runs all night long... "The sign said Triple X" So I associated it with sex... "A guy comes up, lookin' pretty 8-ball" Sketchy tweakers hang out there... "Starts to share his information He said he said he said (etc.) When I have sex I'm always thinkin' 'bout the pavement So I can avoid premature ejaculation" Talks about sex, like he's just been doing it with a hooker! "You could really get it on!!!" "Now I'm gonna hook up..." Alright, so he hires a "hook"er and they hook up. See what I'm saying? I understand that it's not what the song's about... But that was my initial interpretation :) |

Lol um an 8-ball is an eighth of an ounce of coke. Very common terminology. But I suppose a guy in Issaquah with snaggly teeth who is coked the fuck out is likely a tweaker too. Unless I'm dumb and in Issaquah an 8-ball also refers to an eighth of meth. Incidentally here in the California's Bay Area a "tweaker" can really mean anyone who likes uppers (coke, meth, E, Adderall, etc) :) |

| And they DESERVE the money. Seriously, can you think of a better band on Earth? | |
| Modest Mouse – Other People's Lives Lyrics | 14 years ago |

Reminds me of Beach Side Property... "I got wood legs and bow legs and no legs at all!" I love that, but what is bowlegged? |

| Bright Eyes – Cleanse Song Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
Are you guys sure he says “when your heart gave out in a mission bed”? I always thought it was “when your heart gave out into Mission Bay”. Hear me out: Mission Bay is a beautiful seaside city by San Diego. It would go with the list of SoCal cities (Los Angeles, Glendale, Oxnard). Also, when I saw him in Oakland two weeks ago he sang this and introduced it with, “this song takes place right here in California”. So idk, just what I thought it was. |

| Agreed. | |
| Bright Eyes – Light Pollution Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| I do believe they were friends :) I have heard that from a couple of sources. Also, the second verse of "I Will Be Grateful For This Day" is supposedly about Elliott. And "Reinvent the Wheel", but I find that one a little less convincing. More commonly known is that Conor covered Elliott's "The Biggest Lie" on his 2005 live album Motion Sickness. | |
| Bright Eyes – Light Pollution Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| That makes sense. Conor would SO do that. Maybe his (deceased) friend held a particular reverence for John A. Hobson? | |
| Modest Mouse – 3 Inch Horses, Two Faced Monsters Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| its about Mister Ed, an old black/white show from the early 60's. Hes commenting on man creating an artificial monster, much like "Frankenstein" by Mary Shelly-perhaps even basing his song off of it. | |
| Bright Eyes – Contrast and Compare Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
Yup, and the girl in those lyrics (and much of Conor's early work) is Neely Jenkins, who sings with him on this track. They were lovers through much of their youth. |
|
| Bright Eyes – Haile Selassie Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
YOU ARE AMAZING. The only thing I have to add is that the splitting atom and "Omega Day" (like Judgement Day) refers to the atom bomb/nuclear war/the end of the world. Oh! Maybe the tree of smoke is Moses' burning bush, and everything that represents? Miracles, the word of God, and whatnot? I'm so excited for tomorrow I could pee. |

| Bright Eyes – Big Old House (Jesse Harris cover) Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
This song is just beautiful. I was fishing through iTunes looking for Bright Eyes rarities and I happened upon it. I didn't even realize it was a cover. "Please don't say you're still the same, I'll love you if you've changed." Brilliant, and so articulate. Those two lines, for me at least, just describe when you want somebody but you hate the way they are and you're dying for them to turn into somebody you can love. |

| Bright Eyes – Landlocked Blues Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| I like how on the Motion Sickness version of this song they include the sound of the audience cheering a little after Laura says "C'mere." | |
| Bright Eyes – Cartoon Blues Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| See I thought the powder was ash, too! But what someone earlier said about the Dylan song "Cocaine Blues" kind of clears it up. He was blazing with some strangers and they brought out some coke. | |

| Me too, dude. | |

The story that ecstasy sticks in your spine or affects your spinal fluid at all is a total myth. http://www.goaskalice.columbia.edu/0062.html |

| The Four Winds as NESW makes a whole lot of sense... I like where you're going | |
| Elliott Smith – High Times Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| Hylia, "High times" just means good times, but Elliott is giving it a double meaning, referring to being high, or the time to get high. | |
| Bright Eyes – One Straw (Please) Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| I totally agree that he sounds like he was trying to make it sound awful intentionally! I suspected though that it was simply for the sake of being silly and ridiculous (and possibly ironic). Conor was like 16. | |
| Bright Eyes – Entry Way Song Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| No idea, but I have a clip where he says Something Vague is about his older brother Matt. | |
| Bright Eyes – Time Code Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| He means drinking liquor (to make the time go by faster), until he passes out/has some sort of revelation/dream or "see[s] God". | |
| Bright Eyes – Time Code Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| ... Did you just say The Big Picture is not worth contemplating!? | |
| Bright Eyes – Something Vague Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
I have a demo of this song from 2000, and in the beginning Conor introduces it about his brother Matt, for his 25th birthday. This comprehensive old interview has Conor explicitly stating some of his interpretations of the poem---this time he says it's about Tim. http://www.joesgrille.com/joebps/custom/interviews/BrightEyes.html I think it's a poem about some brother/friend-type figure of his feeling lost and alone, anyway. Conor wrote this song for them in sympathy? Also, in the interview he explains the part about the starving eyes. |

| Bright Eyes – The Big Picture Lyrics | 15 years ago |

Does anybody know who's doing the background vocals during the song? Is it Jenny Lewis? I see nothing about it on Wikipedia.... :// Anyway this is the best song in the world. My current favorite |

| Bright Eyes – Sharp Cutting Wings (Song to a Poet) (Lucinda Williams cover) Lyrics | 15 years ago |

This song makes me cry. I just stand with this glass in my hand feeling like nothing even matters. |
|
| Bright Eyes – Feeling It (For Ian) Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| Yeah, or salvia | |
| Bright Eyes – Oh, You Are the Roots That Sleep Beneath My Feet and Hold the Earth in Place Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| I Will Be Grateful For This Day = definitely! She is now a schoolteacher in Omaha. | |
| Bright Eyes – Loose Leaves Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
The beginning of this song is definitely about his high school girlfriend Neely Jenkins. All the references to "the story" are about her. He also references the same summer in multiple songs, including "A Perfect Sonnet" and "I Will Be Grateful For This Day". I love how it's all tied together, it's sooo romantic. |
|
| Elliott Smith – Shooting Star Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| That's close to how I interpreted it, too, yeah | |
| Bright Eyes – No Prayer Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
I'm dying to find anybody who's as obsessed with the actual meaning of this song (Neely, the story, the fever) as I am<3 Conor you changed my life!! |
|
| Bright Eyes – No Prayer Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| God, this song is fucking incredible. I just love all the poetry<3. | |
| Bright Eyes – Spent on Rainy Days Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| I instantly loved this song the first time I heard it and it was definitely my favorite on Noise Floor for a while. It's so clever and adorably mad. I assume it's partially autobiographical about his drug problems and his relationship with Neely Jenkins, as per usual. | |
| Bright Eyes – A Line Allows Progress, a Circle Does Not Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| Drug addiction is definitely a love/hate relationship. | |
| Bright Eyes – Bad Blood Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| I also saw the coke references :) | |
| Bright Eyes – A Spindle, a Darkness, a Fever, and a Necklace Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| Onetwothreefour, yeah, Conor dated Neely Jenkins of Tilly and the Wall when they were in high school. They lived next door to each other and I get the vibe that Conor included this clip from Mitchell is Moving with her in mind. It seems like much of Fevers and Mirrors is centered around their breakup/its effect on Conor. | |
| Modest Mouse – Lounge Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
Well, Lounge (Closing Time) has clear references to heroin use: "And everybody she knew was going to get the twist And they all went down and did the porcupine And everybody was feeling high" (A twist is a term for a bag of heroin and the porcupine refers to the needle) "We should pull each other's triggers And I'm off" (Shooting each other up, and feeling the effects of the drug hit) It also includes dialogue, presumably between a man and woman courting one another. I always thought this song was about them, hooking up in a car after they get high. The music is very similar too. So beautiful, like a lullaby. |
|
| Bright Eyes – Seashell Tale (M. Ward cover) Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
I almost cry just reading the lyrics. Conor's voice makes this poem so gorgeous. Flesh and blood has found me in your arms again <3 |
|
| Bright Eyes – Weather Reports Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
The storm moved away to a neighboring state. I started the car... Those lines just knock me off my feet every single time. I thought I read in the Noise Floor booklet that this was a cover or something? |
|
| Bright Eyes – Make War Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
This has to be in my top five favorite Bright Eues songs. I swear I've heard a version in which he says "You should count your blessings before you're even out the door", but I haven't been able to find it anywhere. If you see if around, hit me up... And though you say you've found another who will surely speed you on your way, don't let the forest grow over that path you came there by! |
