Bright Eyes – At the Bottom of Everything Lyrics 11 years ago
Reading the comments on this really put this song into perspective for me.

"We must rip out all the epilogues
From the books that we have read
And to the face of every criminal
Strapped firmly to a chair
We must stare, we must stare, we must stare"

- To me this says we act like moral crusaders [take all of the epilogues] when we look into the eyes of someone we feel is lesser than us.

"Set fire to the preacher
Who is promising us hell
And in the ear of every anarchist
That sleeps but doesn't dream
We must sing, we must sing, we must sing"

- This says we do the same to the preachers that we dislike because they "spew hate" or whatever the case may be, like an anarchist we feel isn't living his life because he's not living it the way we would live it, "we must sing" our opinions into their ear.

"We must memorize nine numbers
And deny we have a soul
And in this endless race for property
And privilege to be one
We must run, we must run, we must run"

- We "run" in the "race" for property, living our lives based on material things that dont matter in the end.

"And into the caverns of tomorrow
With just our flashlights and our love
We must plunge, we must plunge, we must plunge
And then we'll get down there
Way down to the very bottom of everything
And then we'll see it, we'll see it, we'll see it

This city bus is swimming past
I'm happy just because
I found out that I am really no one"

- He is saying that we must "plunge" into the future [caverns of tomorrow], and it will take doing this, getting to "the very bottom of everything," to realize the truth [we'll see it, we'll see it, we'll see it]. That our tiny short little lives are so insignificant in the grand scheme of things [I found out that I really am no one] to be living our lives in accordance with things that don't matter (material objects, etc)

I love this song so much more now.
We must plunge.

Bright Eyes – If the Brakeman Turns My Way Lyrics 13 years ago
I know he definitely struggles with neurosis, he has mentioned that before. If you listen to the second half of "An Attempt To Tip The Scales" off of Fevers and Mirrors, he explains that the symbolism of the "fever" is whatever ails you or oppresses you. Just like idreamofafever said above, Conor does a great job at making his lyrics universal and easy to relate to :)

Completely agreed. That was the first thing I thought of.

Great Lake Swimmers – Moving Pictures Silent Films Lyrics 15 years ago
Okay. This is CLEARLY about drugs. Heroin and other opiate-related drugs are often described as slow moving but hard to comprehend -- hence moving pictures, silent films. Painting a dotted line? Needle scars in his arm, or wherever. Saving it up and spending it all? DUH... I mean, music interpretation is obviously very subjective, but I mean, to me, what the ARTIST is conveying here is almost too clear. I can't believe no one related this to drugs.

Wow, or you can all shut the fuck up and make of music what it's supposed to be made of. Bands and artists will put out their stuff for a message, or not. But you can make whatever you want of it.
