This song resonates for me, but for a completely different reason... my wonderful dog, who I've had for 16 years, is still pretty healthy but starting to decline. I know he's near the end of his possible lifespan and we've been through so much together, it's really difficult to imagine him not being in my life; I'm trying to prepare myself for his death. He looks at me sometimes and I wonder what he would say if we spoke the same language. "You look at me with uncertainty, You look at me with urgency. You look at me with fear in your eyes like you're about to fall away." To other people he's old and scruffy but to me he's the same beautiful creature who once was the smartest, fastest, most independent, most graceful dog you can imagine, "I knew you when you were green and strong. You were like a feather on a wing, so long." I tell him when the time comes, I'll be devastated, but he needs to let go, "You know I will miss you when you are gone, but don't be afraid if you just can't hang on. The cold air is pushing hard on you. I know what you're saying; I can feel it, too. You'll go through changes, and I'll go through them too. Don't be afraid now, don't be afraid." It's a beautiful song... |
