I think it's about taking ectascy or another drug that produces euphoria, because the song seems to be referring to a more immediate, urgent euphoria rather than just gradually getting over heartbreak. Also, the lyric 'right time, wrong line' hints at this.

To me, it sounds like this song is about someone with schizophrenia. And the 'boss inside' is the voice inside his head. Throughout his life he's been able to deal with the voices (And all these other cowards They're not hard to boss around You just get them in your arms Then you hold them till they drown) but the 'boss inside' makes him go crazy, and he thinks he is two different people and starts screaming etc. His life would have been made up of 'ugly moments' due to his disorder. That's just what I think, anyway.
