I think it could be a friend of hers who actually drowned while taking a bath when high on heroin. she tried to stop him but she was high, too, though not necessarily on heroin. the courtroom could be a metaphor for how heroin boy felt about his life as an addict, always being judged by everyone ("you don't think i can take a fucking bath by myself? i'm a grown man!"). His sense of invincibility and twisted logic, fueled by his addiciton, caused an accident (spitball) which resulted in his death.
And i absolutely love how this was written, the piano and repetition instilling anxiety and expressing mentally how it feels to have lost someone very close to you. your mind keeps repeating it because it can't believe it happened. and then the lofty release of the words she can imagine him saying now that he's gone, now that she can finally believe it.
Either way, this song, when it doesn't make me all out cry, gives me goosebumps every time. especially when you hear her choking back the tears after she says what he said to her, " i can't drown."(3m35s) that part right there shows so much emotion about the writing, i can't help but name her one of my most favorite artists ever because of it. |

i'm not completely certain but i STRONGLY believe that steely dan would not make such a lyric as "you honk me, you tonk me, why don't you disappear?".
I'm fairly sure it's supposed to be " you haunt me, you taunt me, why don't you disappear?"
