this song makes me want to cry...i think this song might be about growing up.
when you're young, you're innocent; you have "the lights in your eyes." when it says, "they moved forward, and my heart died." when you're young, you're golden, not jaded. anyone who's ever seen The Breakfast Club may remember this line: "When you grow up, your heart dies." i think that's what this means; the loss of your innocence. when you start to realize what kind of a world you were born into. "tell me what they looked like, did they seem afraid to you?" what were you like back then? were you naive enough to be unafraid of growing up? all she can say is "they were kids that i once knew." meaning, this is the person i used to be.
im not sure about the first 2 lines of the chorus, but then the third says "it's hard to know they're still out there," meaning its hard to believe the innocent child is still alive, after all that's went wrong in your life. all that's left to you is a jaded mind and a dead heart.
thats just the first part of the song, and im not gonna make a really long comment, but it just seems to go on about the death of innocence in growing up. |

i love this song, i believe in Jesus, and i think its a great reference to the great sacrifice He gave us, but i have one issue with something. this song is about a little boy who learned of love through Jesus and the bible and all that, but what about those who love without a christian belief? my best friend has to be one of the most loving people I've ever met, and she's an atheist. i just wish that the song more sang of love, and less of what this boy only learned from Jesus. love can exist anywhere. but still, i love this song :D |

i think that this song is about rejoice. rejoicing in your youth, and your ability to spend a few years not having to conform to society and play by their rules. these are your last few years to make it a hell of a time before you have to grow up and are forced to be who everyone else says you have to be. so the song is telling you to not give a damn about what others think and enjoy your last few years of freedom. |

*sigh* i, like almost every American female teenager, only know this song because i heard it on degrassi. but, i will try to forget that it was played for my most beloved character's funeral and will try to interpret it. i think it's about the importance of enjoying life and spending it with the one you love the most for as long as you can, even if it doesn't last. so that way, when your about to die and you reflect on your life, it's one less thing you can regret not doing. |

until i really thought about the lyrics and listened to them, all this song was to me was a sad yet beautiful melody played in the episode of degrassi when jimmy got shot. but now, it speaks of suicide. the line that gets me the most is "the softest grass turns to concrete". Just imagining hitting the ground at that split second before your dead almost makes my heart stop... |
