There's a few things I missed in that last synopsis: To me, the problems he has in life (the "it" from the first line), are all in some way derived from alcohol. Thats why it was buried under a flask....as in, the only way to get to "it" was by tipping the flask and drinking. Also, after the climax where he rebels against the established order of society ("everybody hates me, everybody wanna fight"), he admits that even though he has these thoughts, he's "right there" with everybody else partying and drinking - trying to fit in by being in environments that he knows he doesn't like and make him unhappy. He says that everybody else has the capacity to view things the way he does but won't take off their rose-colored glasses: "everybody seems to have the same change but can't break my five up". And that he can't live his life the way he wants to and help others with his "two cents" until he stops drinking ("can't spare nothin while i'm holdin a cup"). Also, note the irony of the hook: "If you come down and just breathe, and just breathe in and out..." Coming out of withdrawal and coming out of the daze of being a Product of Society - you'll feel better if you relax and realize that if you don't look to other people on how to live your life, you wont find surround yourself with bad influences (though the "right?" seems to suggest thats not true and there is no escape). "i can never be what I want to be nothin but a man..." While he's drinking he realizes he's not accomplishing anything in his life, and that he won't as long as he's a product of society (i.e. "nothing but a man"). Because he knows he is a product of society he latches on to things for support or help, trying to get: a grip, a hold, a handle (note the double meaning, door handle and handle of alcohol) , a hand. Great, great song. I think Dessa and P.O.S. are the two best out of Doomtree - both amazing and intelligent artists. Can't wait to see them when they come to Austin in November |

Yea, this is one of my favorite songs of all time. Here are my thoughts: Its kinda like a recovering alcoholic's anthem - or, at least someone who wants to recover but can't. I think it starts with the reasons behind turning to booze (the ambiguous "it" in the first line) and being encouraged by everybody else doing it (my thoughts are that P.O.S. is Product of Society, and he frequently references the things other people do; also, it makes sense that to be a "product of society" would ruin your life). "I can see the same shit from her" to me means he's looking at his girl, who is in just as bad of a state. She's fine with the life they lead and is o.k. with living life in a drunken blur. He's also saying that isn't it ironic that we have such great plans for ourselves, and get consumed with finding purpose "sneak into our lives", but then we never act on them ("stir over the perfect things to say and then just choke on the words"). He then expands on this with the "everybody" stanza, noting that people want to be recognized and accomplished while also having fun and not taking sides/offending people (I hear "everybody want the consequence of playing the fence"). Basically, you can't have it all without being shallow. To me this is the build-up, afterwards saying if you turn on society, you'll make a lot of enemies ("everybody hates me, everybody wanna fight"). There can be a lot more analysis viewing it in this light, but the take-home to me is that using drugs and alcohol as an escape only indicates the larger problem in the lives we lead. Anybody else see this? I didn't look at it this way until I heard the song so many times that I memorized the lyrics and it finally resonated with me. |
