Lana Del Rey – Video Games Lyrics 13 years ago
This is a lot darker than I would have thought, but it's actually a brilliant idea.

This is one of my favorite songs about having sex in a car.

Tori Amos – Battle of Trees Lyrics 14 years ago
She talks about her inspiration of the song here, but it only sort of helps it make sense.

Wicked – What Is This Feeling? Lyrics 14 years ago
If you change some lyrics, it's a love song.

Tori Amos – Nautical Twilight Lyrics 14 years ago
She has forgotten herself in her relationship and lost what made her a real person to be a part of this couple. And now that it's fallen apart, she has to find herself again to save them.

Gillian Welch – One Little Song Lyrics 14 years ago
Everything seems like it's been done - especially in music - and she wants to make at least one new and beautiful thing in her lifetime.

Lucinda Williams – Sweet Old World Lyrics 14 years ago
Such a sad and compassionate song about death. I've always assumed it was about a suicide, since some of the lyrics make it seem like the person felt unimportant and unloved and chose to leave "this sweet old world."

Emmylou Harris – The Road Lyrics 14 years ago
Another beautiful tribute to Gram Parsons. I think this is one of the most touching songs written by Emmylou Harris.

Kidneythieves – K Lyrics 14 years ago
It's incredibly sexy. It's also more than likely about the drug.

This isn't where I originally heard it, but it is mentioned in this interview.

Vanessa Carlton – Tall Tales For Spring Lyrics 14 years ago
This may be the most elegant and sincere pro-atheism song I have ever heard. Think about it.

"We pray to a ghost that we never met
Time turns for a cure, from the scientists for
Madness, madness of the heart
But you knew it, you knew it from the start."

She's saying the religion and faith in things we don't understand are total madness and loss of reason and people are looking to science and logic for answers. She goes on to talk about how "Hawking will tell us no tall tales this spring." In contrast to various faith that have stories to explain everything. It makes more sense if you consider that when asked about her beliefs, she talks about how she's an atheist but Stephen Hawking's work and ideas means a lot to her.

Anyway, regardless of whether or not anyone agrees with that, that's what I see in it and I think it's a beautiful song.

Florence + the Machine – Blinding Lyrics 14 years ago
Does this remind anyone else of Gillian in Practical Magic? Her trying to recover from an abusive relationship and get away, and her eventually ending up burying her ex in her sister's garden?

Tori Amos – Your Cloud Lyrics 14 years ago
I can't think of a more beautiful song about seperation. When you've spent part of your life with someone, it's hard to tell where you end and they begin and vise verse. Leaving them is like leaving a part of yourself behind, even if logically speaking it's the best option.

Tori Amos – Drive All Night Lyrics 14 years ago
I can see how the prostitute theory would fit, but that's never how I saw it. To me it's about two people who have always been friends. One is a woman who's tired and bored with her life. The other is a man in a relationship that isn't working. They have an uneasy romantic/sexual relationship.

I'm pretty sure the lyrics are "He'd steal all their scales and he'd swim away."

Jewel – A Very Big Girl Lyrics 14 years ago
He's helping out a girl that he says he's not attracted to, but the narrator thinks he is. Also, the girl might not really be as needy as she makes herself out to be.

Tori Amos – He Has A Well, You Have The Ocean Lyrics 14 years ago
This song is personal for me because I have a friend this song reminds me of. It's about a woman (Caroline, according to the song) who has been hurt before. Since it said ANOTHER rapist, I'm thinking she's been raped before. She's with a man who treats her badly and the narrator of the song is telling Caroline that she has so much potential and so much love to give. She has to make a new beginning but she can't do it with this man because of how he mistreats her.

Emmylou Harris – Boy From Tupelo Lyrics 14 years ago
It's a love lost song that's also a tribute to Elvis.
She's leaving someone who's emotionally neglected her for a long time now, and she's reflecting on what could have been in their relationship and all the things that could have been in it. Mainly though she talks about what she could have been for this person if they had appreciated her more. As it is though, she's leaving. I love the things she lists as examples of things that are also gone. Not things I would have thought of or that pop up in a lot of other song. I mean, "your last chance Texaco?"

Sarah McLachlan – Out of Tune Lyrics 14 years ago
It's about a couple whose relationship is in trouble, but at the same time they're the only thing the other one has to lean on. It's one of the better and sadder songs on the new album.

Jewel – Fragile Heart Lyrics 15 years ago
This is so much better than the version of Fragile Heart that made it onto 0304 and Goodbye Alice in Wonderland. Not only are the lyrics just better written, they have a lot more humor and vulnerability to them.

Tori Amos – Dragon Lyrics 15 years ago
I'm with the group of people who thinks she's saying that his dragon does not, in fact, need slaying. I think the song's about trying to console someone who's been deeply hurt by a past relationship. He's hurt and confused and blames his past lover. The narrator of the song is sympathizing while telling him he has to take responsibility for his life. Because of the past heartbreak, he's suppressed the wilder and more intense - maybe even the more masculine - parts of himself, psychologically and sexually. I think that's what the dragon and wild card comments are about. She's trying to make him take some initiative to heal, while trying to revive him. At the same time he distrusts her and is intimidated by her feelings for him.

Marilyn Manson – Mutilation Is the Most Sincere Form of Flattery Lyrics 15 years ago
Wow, that was random. I'm not sure that had anything to do at all with the comment it was in response to. But suckyourpitydown does have a good point. As awesome as Marilyn Manson was, Alice Cooper had a similar image since the 60s. Styles of music tend to get recycled over time. New bands bring back styles of music they admired growing up and make it their own. Basically every musician is guilty of it. Even MCR, and even Marilyn Manson.
