Grace Potter and the Nocturnals – Apologies Lyrics 14 years ago
My initial interpretation of this song was that it was about a man who loves his best friend and she doesn't reciprocate. In the first verse he has come to her after he has ended their friendship and is telling her how much she's changed and she says that its his fault if she's changed because he ended their friendship. Then throughout the chorus he is telling her that he loves her even though it hurts him, even though he doesn't want to. And that its amazing that he's even there talking to her, but he is because he loves her. The second verse refers to her smothering him with the "blanket" of her friendship, all she wants is him to love her as a friend but its too much for him "its a little bit too warm sometimes". But every time she tries to get closer it hurts him more and he has to "step out for air" and he tries to harden himself to the pain, "and he froze", because her love is painful and is always too much for him. The next verse after the chorus is him telling her that he will always be there for him and be her friend even though her love for someone else rips him to pieces. The last verse is both of them accepting that their friendship is doomed and now all that is left for the two of them is to apologize and try to move on.

Mumford & Sons – Winter Winds Lyrics 15 years ago
I personally related to this song and I felt that he was speaking of when he was in love with someone who loved him back just not enough to overcome the love they felt for someone else. I felt that in the first verse when he spoke of the winter wind it was a metaphor for his agony when he was in love and the second line refers to the warmth that another person showed him that helped him heal. The last two lines in that verse are about when he questions his feelings for this new person and wondered if he was just the fear of his pain that healed him or their love. And the last line is his reassurance that he really was in love with this new person. The chorus is saying that his head is telling him that this person is everything he's looking for, that they're perfect, but his heart is saying no this time it will hurt you more than the last time and I can't let you do that. A powerful statement because it shows the heart that was once whimsical has hardened in self-preservation. In the second verse I feel like he is pleading with his heart, saying that one day I'll die and every hurt that I felt wont matter so while I'm here I should make my time memorable and I should fulfill my desires. In the next verse when he speaks about God he is speaking figuratively of the person he was in love with because he idolized them. He feels shame because he loved someone but he couldn‘t have them and that hurt him too much for him not to turn away from the pain, and that shame sent him to this new person because they showed compassion. These lines are his realization that his heart is right and he cannot have this person that he want so desperately because it would rip him apart in the end. The last two lines are his last cry of remorse that he lost this new love. He saying that it’s evil that has won because he’s lost them. The last verse are his parting words, he telling them that one day when they feel the agony of misplaced love that it will end and they will move on. In this last verse he has completely accepted what his heart was telling him from the beginning and resigning to leave for his own good.
