The Jam – Funeral Pyre Lyrics 15 years ago
Doesn't the low budget video of this song shows the burning of the books, Nazi censorship in the early 1930s? I've never really thought of this song as being a political song, but it may be about stifling new ideas and freedom of thought.

I also read somewhere that Foxton and Buckler came up with the tune (like many Jam tunes, but with this one they actually put their foot down for credit!) while Weller wrote the lyrics. The 1983 Snap! album has a slightly different mix (although the difference is minimal), as none of the band were very happy with the original. The bass line and drumming on this song are top rate, but it has not really stood the test of time like many Jam songs. Do you agree?

The Style Council – Homebreakers Lyrics 15 years ago
It's a criticism of the crass comment made by Norman Tebbit, Conservative Party Chairman, in the 1980s. 'If you can't find a job, get on your bike and find one.' Sadly, when the Tories destroyed mining communities around Britain, they offered no immediate and alternative employment opportunities. Homebreakers is all about Thatcherism and how it ripped families apart. It is a classic, one of Paul Weller's most angry songs. Mick Talbot sings the opening verse though, unusual for TSC as he didn't sing that many. 'All the love in the world, can't put dinner on the table.' Brilliant and powerful.

The Style Council – A Man Of Great Promise Lyrics 15 years ago
It is about David Waller's suicide. If you get the original tape of Our Favourite Shop, Weller and Talbot discuss all the songs on the reverse side. It is a a great song.
