Why hello there soul - wasn't aware you were moonlighting as lyrics for Sara Bareilles. But seriously, every word of this song is singing out to my soul. It's definitely a song about wanting a fresh start, not even like a life makeover, but trying to get back the inner strength that you've, for whatever reason, lost/misplaced. It's about letting go of the past, like there is a giant dark rain cloud hanging over your head tormenting you and reminding you of your mistakes, hardships, and general life turmoil and you're like, you know what, you don't control me. I won't have you hanging over my head. RAIN DOWN. Because guess what, when it's over, you're going to dry out, the ground will be new and fresh, and I'm going to walk on. You appreciate the sunshine so much more after a heavy downpour. |

This is a song for the critics, the office gossips, the mean girls, etc. of the world who just want to bring you down because they can. I especially think this part "Locked and loaded You're practically floating away now In your fortress you feel like You're more or less safe now" is directed at the online communities that hide behind their anonymity and are the most judgemental and cruelest of the bunch. Other parts you can tell are directed at people who talk behind your back, smile to your face, and play dumb if you call them out on it. |

I took it to be about her falling for a guy who she really grew to love, he's not perfect but he makes her feel, but her own reservations made it difficult to open up to him. He thinks she's cold, she's afraid of revealing too much and ending up showing him just how messed up she is on the inside, but because of that he leaves her or at least is pulling away if she won't open up. But she's still scared that she'll get hurt, that she'll just be "a track he lays" because she feels like his personality/inner strength overpowers her, and if she gives up too much he'll just leave anyways - she's stuck on her own perception of her faults. More broadly, it's about the tenuous struggle between wanting to give the one you love what they want and open up, and being scared that doing so will drive them away and leave you shattered. Sometimes, it just feels like you're going to lose either way... |
