well, i believe that this song is not about the lead singer dad it is about the kid sitting next to him in the video. His father left when he was young and wrote this song such as the line " i wanted you to see the first thing that i ever poured my heart into" meaning he wanted his father to see that playing and songwriting were some of the first things he ever really was dedicated to. and like the the line "you'll never know the pain i've been through"meaning the pain of seeing his father walk out he is simply saying that his father had caused him pain with him not in his life. and in the third verse when he states "i promise to erase the past and let my heart forgive the former you" he means that he forgives his father for his past and the last line is about him walking home to his father as in God like walking toward the end of life and taking my fathers hand meaning go to heaven. |
