Slipknot – Psychosocial Lyrics 15 years ago
Hey, I forgot to review part of the lyrics. So, here's the review:

I did my time and I want out;
so effusive*;
Fade*: it doesn't cut;
the soul is not so vibrant.
----Means I served my country and I'm done dealing with all the BS. Not sure what the last 2 lines mean, though, especially since I'm not sure if they're saying fade or fate.

Lyrics I didn't review, I don't know the meaning of at all or have only the vaguest idea. Also keep in mind that I'm not offering a lot of opinions here on what I'm reviewing; I'm just saying what I think the lyrics themselves mean. I typed this up in Word Pad, so it might look a bit weird (format-wise). Asterisks at the ends of words refer to notes at the bottom, listed in the order the asterisks are given (e.g. 2nd asterisk = 2nd note).

I did my time and I want out;
so effusive*;
Fade*: it doesn't cut;
the soul is not so vibrant.

The reckoning,
the sickening,
packaging subversion*
pseudo-sacrosanct* perversion.
----I think this means that we keep popularizing ideas that destroy society from within. Politics, for example - the different parties, the electoral debates, the caucuses, etc. We're so focused on politics (in this example) that we don't focus on the issues, even though we pretend to, or we focus on only certain issues. We've taken things that are sacred - Democracy, for example - and turned them into something else entirely (to use this example, a pissing contest).

Go drill your deserts,
go dig your graves;
then fill your mouth
with all the money you will save.
----The wealthy of society keep searching for new ways to make money without spending much, and oil is the biggest issue right now; renewable energy is hard to come by, and oil is getting harder to get. I think this is telling people that we're killing society with the whole issue, and that we're eating our money. Basically, we've become a monetary cesspool of a society focused almost entirely on material gain.

Sinking in,
getting smaller again,
I'm done;
it has begun; I'm not the only one.
----The people that actually matter in the States (or the world) are getting pounded into the ground by the wealthy and powerful of society. 'I'm not the only one' likely means that it's not just a few people, a certain group of people, a certain culture/sub-culture, etc; it's everyone that's getting shanked due to the societal higher-ups' actions.

And the rain will kill us all...
We throw ourselves against the wall,
but no one else can see
the preservation of the martyr in me.
----If you take it as 'reign' instead of 'rain', it could mean that society is pleading for help from the government and the people with the means to 'fix' society only to get a wall of silence and ignorance in return; 'reign' itself could mean the governments, but it could also mean the people who run society as a whole - major corporations, 'country club' people, politicians, and so on (basically anyone with power, wealth, and influence). Taking it as 'rain' could mean society as a whole, where each person is a rain drop, and that we're collectively bashing our own brains in. It's happening so much that the few people who actually give a damn about the world around them are being ignored and their ideas are essentially crucifying them because no one of importance will listen ('but no one else can see the preservation of the martyr in me); 'preservation of the martyr in me' probably also means that fewer and fewer people who actually give a damn and aren't greedy/ambitious/etc pricks exist as time passes.

Psychosocial!

There are cracks
in the road we laid!
But where the temple fell,
the secrets have gone mad.
----I think this means that the paths we've chosen are far from perfect. 'The temple' probably refers to the people in power, the government that we've established to lead us; 'the secrets have gone mad' likely refers to the amount of secrecy within our government having gotten WAY out of control.

This is nothing new,
but when we killed it all,
the hate was all we had.
----'This is nothing new' probably means that not much changes from generation to generation; we keep repeating our mistakes and we keep relying on the government not to fuck up - which they keep doing with their greed and ambition and infighting. 'The hate was all we had' probably means that we relied on the government despite each new 'mistake' because of the idea that our government was the pinnacle of patriotism - the White House, the Capitol, the Pentagon, and so on protecting us against things we saw as 'evil' (e.g. communism). It may also refer to mistakes society as a whole has made, such as segregation and persecution of others based on race; religion; sex (male/female); orientation (gay/straight/etc); color; or anything else.

Who needs another mess?
We could start over;
just look me in the eyes
and tell me I'm wrong.
----Probably trying to tell society & the people in charge to shape up and start fresh without repeating the mistakes of the past - greed, ambition, bigotry, racism/sexism/etc, and so on. But also telling people to quit ignoring the people who actually know better than them and actuall pay attention ('look me in the eyes and say I'm wrong).

Now there's only emptiness...
Venomous, insipid*;
I think we're done;
I'm not the only one.
----I think Slipknot's trying to say that everything's the same all over: the same problems, the same greed/ambition/etc, and so on plagues society as a whole. It doesn't differentiate between one part of society or another; the same thing that affects the rich fucks with their diamond rings and fancy cars affects the people who can barely afford to eat or pay rent, and everyone in between. We've become a cesspool of a society. I also don't think this is strictly limited to the U.S., though it's probably the first place that comes to mind. I also think they're saying that we've pretty much fucked ourselves bloody, so much so that our souls are empty of anything decent/noble/whatever, which goes back to the part about starting fresh (see previous stanza).

THE LIMITS OF THE DEAD!

Fake anti-fascist* lie:
I tried to tell you, but
your purple hearts
are giving out.
----I think this means that soldiers aren't really fighting the war they think they are anymore. We're all about stopping terrorists, but the higher-ups are all about politics and it's influencing the missions our soldiers undertake as well as the awards they're given (e.g. the Purple Heart, as mentioned here). They're basically fighting the same wars over and over again because politicians are playing the same games they've always played. I could perhaps explain it a bit better if I was a soldier; perhaps one would like to reply to this post with a bit bitter explanation on this part?

Can't stop a killing idea
if it's hunting season;
is this what you want?
I'm not the only one...

*Unduly demonstrative or lacking reserve.
*I'm not sure if he's saying fade or fate.
*(subvert) To overthrow.
*(pseudo); (sacrosanct) extremely sacred.
*Without distinctive, interesting, or stimulating qualities.
*A person who is dictatorial or has extreme right-wing views.

I haven't read all five pages and I'm not going to. What I will say is that I like what you have to say here. I think it makes more sense than what anyone else has said. Also, here's a video on YouTube that has the song & lyrics: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ERB2amudLsI

If you click the desc, it has a bit of info on Slipknot and such - but not the meaning of the song. Still, you can see what the lyrics are and sing along if you like. Also...love the name, VK2; great story, that manga.
