I don't know if Bob Segar intended this, but to me this song has its resolution to the story told in "Still the Same". Still the Same is the same 2 characters, only a few years later. They're also the first 2 songs on side 1 of the Stranger In Town LP. Hollywood Nights is part 1, Still the Same is part 2. |

It is clearly about a woman. The gambling/playing/betting are all metaphors. I don't know if Bob Segar intended this, but to me this song was always the resolution to the story told in "Hollywood Nights". Still the Same is the same 2 characters, only years later. They're also the first 2 songs on side 1 of the Stranger In Town LP. Hollywood Nights is part 1, Still the Same is part 2. Now, I don't know if I'm right about the possible 2 song story arc here, but I'm very sure that the song is about a woman, and the narrators previous interaction with her. To say it's about gambling is like saying Against the Wind is about jogging (as already mentioned), or that Turn the Page is about reading. |
