Built to Spill – The First Song Lyrics 14 years ago
this might be off, but indulge me...

"and words just make it worse / they're misunderstood / see just like there / if you can't spell it out / if it's just understood / then you think it isn't there"

when Doug says "see just like there" perhaps he is referring to the "they're" in the previous line. it is really quite clever and true. if you cannot spell out the various forms of "there" (there, their, they're) you could possibly miss the true meaning of the word.
I think this song is speaking to the difficulties/frustration we face with morals and character when we realize how conniving we really are even when we try to be genuine.

Junip – Black Refuge Lyrics 15 years ago
if anything can be said about Junip's latest recordings... they leave A LOT of room for interpretation. I appreciate that even though it can be frustrating to have to rely solely on my own experiences to give the songs meaning.

In its most broad and general interpretation, I would say this song is about a relationship between two people. One person chooses to "take the high road" by giving excuses and maintaining innocence while the other (the voice) chooses to be more realist and cynical... recognizing that he is tired of the BS "Because I tend to forget my duty when I get to close to your resistance "... ultimately, this song is a declaration that he is done trying to look at the relationship as something hopeful... Hence the "Black Refuge"

Bon Iver – Woods Lyrics 15 years ago
an excellent play on words where two of the meanings of the word "still" fit.

"still" as in alcohol distillation goes along with being "down on my mind" and "slow down time" (the ataxic effects)

"while still" "a period of calm or silence" also fits with being alone in the woods.

lyrically and musically beautiful.

Stars – Dead Hearts Lyrics 15 years ago
looks like several posts are right in line with what torq and amy said on an NPR segment "World Cafe".

Torq explained that while they were ready to make a "dance record" his father died and he just couldn't let himself "write about a prostitute and drug dealer falling in love". torq said stars is most accurately described as "a band that writes sad dance music".

here is a link to the interview, they also played a few songs (including this one) in the studio.

Ben Harper – Please Bleed Lyrics 15 years ago
i agree with meesahunt.

in fact, i find it very interesting to look at this song from the prospective of Jesus.

it seems to fit what we see in the Bible regarding the life of Christ and his treatment.

When Jesus says "please bleed" not hoping to cause pain but to verify that what he is seeing is real.
he is saying it to man, man who has ignored "the least of these", allowed starvation, rape, murder and other injustices to occur around the world all while we spoil ourselves with a 2nd helpings at dinner and an iPhone.
We behave in such a way that even Jesus Christ, the one who died for us, is in doubt that we are human.

(i am in no way claiming exemption from this observation, i found it quite disturbing and convicting)

Manchester Orchestra – Shake It Out Lyrics 15 years ago
one reference i have yet to see mentioned is to

"cuz I'm done being done with the funerals at least for now"

regardless if you want to admit that Andy is a christian or not. it is clear this is in reference to salvation and the forgiveness of sins... only Andy is saying he is tired of "being born again" and again and again (The reason for the plural version of funeral)

"shake it out" is always directed to God. he is asking God to shake out his fears and disobedience.

based on the context of Andy's childhood and current status, I would imagine this is the inspiration of his lyrics.

this article supports it...
