I think it is more literal than metaphorical. He plainly says his mother was raped when she was nine years old and she lost her faith in humanity/God and really lost a part of who she was that day (hey ma, I know, you died so long ago, Hey ma, now I see, you're still a nine year old girl screaming). She died inside and was never really able to move on and grow as a person. It is a very dark song about the more negative aspects of life. |

It is about how Rob hates America and wants us to be destroyed. I understand not trusting our leaders as they are killers and liars. But the rest of it is just incoherent heroin-induced ranting. Still love the band though haha. |

That is completely incorrect. This is about the 2003 invasion of Iraq, obviously. They even talk about Fallujah in the song. Considering Saddam was known for actively torturing, murdering, and starving his people and we took him out...and this song is obviously against that action, I would say it isn't about sympathy for tortured and starving people at all, but the opposite. Rob is obviously an isolationist who thinks we should just let every piece of shit in the world murder hundreds or thousands of people. |

| And I love America. That doesn't mean I love my congressman or the attorney general. | |

I think he is much too smart to have such a cliche, pop-culture position like that. Capitalism beats the hell out of socialism and communism (see: history of the world in the last 300 years for reference). To me, this is the opposite. This is the fall of America because we've let the rest of the world dictate our actions. Our leaders lie to us and try to control us. More laws, more taxes, more government, more control. The best part is, people my age these days think that is what they're preventing when they vote for socialist liberals or RINOs (Republican In Name Only). Right now, our two biggest political parties that harbor all our leaders are virtually the same. There is little diversity. Obama and Romney's policies are the same, they just spin them a different way. That is what this song says to me. Whether or not the author intended it... |

| Stray From The Path – Negative And Violent Lyrics | 14 years ago |

The meaning is obvious. Hardcore kids are self-important, judgemental, and stuck up dbags who care more about impressing each other than being themselves. They do this while they claim to dislike this behavior from others. Essentially, the hardcore scene is full of coolguys that embody everything they hate. Source: I was a hardcore kid before this band existed and at one point was guilty of everything this song charges. The fact that I even have to stipulate how long I've been in the scene is proof enough of this. |

| 311 – Guns (Are for Pussies) Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
BrazilianFan: You're dumb. You base that opinion on emotion, but not fact or data. Over five million people in the country legally carry firearms everday. Most states don't even require a permit for some form of carry (openly on your hip or concealed under your clothes. Varies by state). Guns are used about 2.5 millions times a year for self-defense according to the FBI and Department of Justice. Less than 10,000 people a year are murdered with guns. Less than 300 people out of the 4 million or more with concealed carry permits have been charged with a crime related to guns in the last five years. Simply put, most gun owners know that when they're carrying they can't get mad in traffic or argue with people because they can't escalate a situation. Owning and carrying a gun has made me a better and more calm person. I just walk away if someone gets mad at me. My gun is to defend human life ONLY. |

Guns are not often used in self-defense by mistake. They are used about 2.5 millions times a year for self-defense according to the FBI and Department of Justice. Whereas only about 13,000 people die from being shot every year (this include police, criminals, law-abiding citizens in self-defense, and accidents by any of the previous three). Contrast that to the hundreds of thousands of deaths related to driving every year and you might find a REAL issue is texting/drinking while driving... Also, 49 states allow some way for a normal citizen to carry a firearm for self-defense. Illinois is the only state that doesn't and they are currently being sued in court over it (and expected to lose). |

| Lynyrd Skynyrd – Saturday Night Special Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
And to the people saying cheap Saturday Night Special handgun are the real problem...the poor people who live in ghettos and need to defend themselves can only afford those. That is why they exist. I like Saturday Night Specials for collector value, but obviously I have firearms worth many several hundreds of dollars more for self-defense. But not everyone in Compton has that option. |

From another site: "I heard an interview on the radio with one of the LS members, and they talked about that song. He said that they wrote that song based on the death of a friend, even though 'they all carried guns anyway'." They wrote it as a knee-jerk emotional response of a bad thing a HUMAN did to their friend and they admitted it. Don't blame a firearm for killing people unless you're going to blame cars for car accidents (which by the way causes almost 10 times the amount of deaths a year). Texting/drinking and driving is what all you gun control people shoul dbe focusing on. |

What statistics are you guys reading? Handguns were used an estimated TWO MILLION times last year alone in self-defense. This doesn't always mean having to fire, sometimes merely drawing gets someone to leave you alone. *These are from U.S. Department of Justice and FBI statistics...so whatever the gun control groups say is irrelevant. Screw Skynyrd. They clearly didn't take the time to research firearms use before they wrote the song. Just another uninformed and emotional reaction to firearms. |

| Billy Talent – The Navy Song Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
"Random" above has it right. Except I will add that people in the Navy aren't Soldiers, they are Sailors. People in the Army are Soldiers, people in the Marine Corps are Marines, people in the Air Force are Airmen. It is obviously about a Sailor in WWII. He is probably either part of a landing party (on the beaches), fighting Japanese/German ships/U-boats, or a Navy FMF Corpsman (which is a Marine Corps Medic. Marines don't have their own Medics, so their combat units use Navy Corpsman. They call them "Devil Docs" and they are some of the most respected people in the Navy). Either way this is a cool song. I like modern bands that respect the Armed Forces, because it is so popular/cool to speak negatively about them. If you have a problem with the current wars, take it up with the politicians! The military folks are just doing their job. |
