Sufjan Stevens – The Owl and the Tanager Lyrics 14 years ago
Wow, someone's a little sensitive. I don't think this song is about Jesus, but like most of Sufjan's songs (yes, most) there are religious themes. There's no way "Cavalry" is not a reference to the crucifixion.

Beirut – Santa Fe Lyrics 14 years ago
I think this is about the leap to faith. Santa Fe means holy faith.

Abbot Lot came to Abbot Joseph and said: “Father, to the limit of my ability, I keep my little rule, my little fast, my prayer, meditation and contemplative silence; and to the limit of my ability, I work to cleanse my heart of thoughts; what more should I do?” The elder rose up in reply, and stretched out his hands to heaven, and his fingers became like ten lamps of fire. He said: “Why not be utterly changed into fire?”

–Saying of the Desert Fathers

I know Age of Adz is the "less religious" album but I really think this song does have spiritual themes. I think, like someone said earlier, it might be about guilt ("I'd rather be burned than be living in debt"), which as a Christian leads to more guilt, because if Jesus forgives you, why won't you forgive yourself?

agreed, I think it's as simple as that.

Arcade Fire – Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains) Lyrics 15 years ago
I don't think that this song is pro-city at all. I think the song (and album, really) is about how when we're teenagers growing up in the suburbs, we idealize the city. We think that once we move to the big city, we will finally find "our kind" and everyone will be open-minded, contemporary, liberal, etc. Then, once we move to the city, we realize that it's basically all the same- all the human problems we had in the suburbs followed us to the city. "We can never get away from the sprawl."

Agreed. I think this song is actually about how we romanticize the cities as being ultra-contemporary, liberal, etc but we can never escape the small-mindedness and other human problems that we complained about in the suburbs.
