Chrisette Michele – Golden Lyrics 14 years ago
I absolutely love this song....it will mos def be one of my wedding songs. I think that Chrisette is asking for something for simple that every woman wants to experience and that is real/true love. In our society, we see so many people getting married and those marriages ending up in divorce. There was once upon a time when people used to be married and stay married forever. There was once upon a time that people fought for one another in relationships, instead of giving up at the first sign of problems/trouble.

Love and marriage is supposed to be stable and secure for a woman. Our vows are supposed to be forever, but our society has made marriage an easy in and out. I want what Chrisette is looking for too. I think that this song is brilliant!!!

India.Arie – The Truth Lyrics 14 years ago
This is how it feels when you find your soulmate; someone who you have a lot in common with. Looking at it from a spiritual perspective, man is the head of woman, and Christ is the head of man, and God is the head of Christ. So, if we are a reflection of God, our creator, then we are also a reflection of our husbands; and if he is fly/bright/positive/true, then we should be too. When you find a man to meet these qualitifications, then as someone else said, even his imperfections are worth looking over because you see so many other things that are "perfect" within him.

India.Arie – Beautiful Surprise Lyrics 14 years ago
After our first date, I told my fiance that he was a "beautiful surprise." I wasn't even expecting to like him, so I mos def wasn't expecting to fall in love with him.... This will be one of our wedding songs because it amazes me how I wasn't even looking for a relationship or love, but he came along and changed my whole life.

When we meet someone, we never know the positive impact that they will have on our lives. It's like one day you don't even know them, and the next day you can't stop thinking about them. This emotion is very real to me... Another point that she makes is that in relationships, we should be learning from one another. And we can't worry about the future; we have to live for and enjoy the present and ensure that we have a future together. Also, India is acknowledging that that man is "the bomb." He is everything that she asked for, everything that she needs...

Jill Scott – Cross My Mind Lyrics 14 years ago
Another great song by Jilly from Philly... Although we move on in our relationships, our old relationships (our past) may sometimes cross our mind. I'm a firm believer that nobody or nothing is all bad. So whatever the bad was in the old relationship, it is easy to forget the bad, and remember the good. So in saying that "you just running cross my mind," Jill is saying that she thought about the old (the good of the old). However, by the end of the song, she is saying that although those things were good, the reality is that the relationship was no longer good and she is glad that she is out of it.

Jill Scott – The Fact Is (I need you) Lyrics 14 years ago
Wow, greatly stated, Loveablel06. As an African American women, we are taught to be independent; to not have to depend on a man to have and maintain our lifestyle. However, I think that Jill is being very vulnerable and transparent in saying that "yes I am independent, but there are still some things that I can't do on my own... I need a man." One of those things, as she addresses, is raising a male child. As women, we can not teach men how to be men; it takes men to do that. I absolutely love this song!!!

Erykah Badu – Next Lifetime Lyrics 14 years ago
ShanteC15, I feel your interpretation of this song, as I've been in this position before... I've been in an 'unhappy' relationship and wishing I was with someone else who I felt could make me happier.

In talking about seeing that person in the next lifetime, this is a reference to reincarnation to me.

I like the fact that although she may be feeling the other person, she is not willing to cheat on her partner to be with the other person. She acknowledge the positive energy that the other person possesses, but do not want to be immoral by stepping outside of her current relationship.

Erykah Badu – Bag Lady Lyrics 14 years ago
I agree with Throwdown in thinking about relationships when I hear this song. As women, we carry a lot of unnecesary baggage from old relationships into our new relationships, and then wonder why they don't last... We have to learn to let go of all of the negativity of the old (the past) before beginning something new (the future). It's not fair for our new relationships to have to suffer because we have not let go of baggage from old relationships.

I also agree that Erykah is speaking of all women. Regardless of age, ethnicity/culture, or socio-economic status, all of us women have taken old baggage into a new relationship at some point in our lives. However, we live and learn that we must let go of the baggage in order to move forward.
