Gorillaz – Dracula Lyrics 15 years ago
It isn't about drugs. It's about struggling through the daily trials and barely making it. Also, some of you get the lyrics wrong. So first, here are the correct lyrics:
"I am a vampire!"

(Some of us just toe the line...
the rest of us are out of reach.
Everybody, party time.
Some of us
will never sleep again.)

"Rest is good for the blood!"

(Repeat of chorus)
Dracula,
Dracula, Dracula.
Dracula, Dracula.

(Repeat of chorus)
Dracula,
Dracula, Dracula.
Dracula, Dracula.

Meanings:

People struggle to make it. Either you barely make it, or you're "out of reach." But you should celebrate to pass the time, because you'll never sleep again. You'll be too busy working, becoming more and more like the living dead, "I am a vampire!". "Rest is good for the blood." You get no rest, you have no blood. Vampires themselves do not have blood, so they must drink the blood of others.

This song has so much meaning and people over look it. That and it's just kick ass. It's not about drugs, or any of that other stuff. I'd bet my bottom dollar on that.

Janelle Monáe – Many Moons Lyrics 15 years ago
Alright, I'm going to try to break this down word by word in how I see it. First, I'd like to say that I think the opening line is "We're dancing free, but we're stuck here, on the ground. Listen carefully. I do believe this is what she's saying

We're dancing fee, but we're stuck here, on the ground.
And everybody tryina' figure they way out
Hey, hey, hey, hey!
All we ever wanted to say,
Was chased, erased and then thrown away!
And day by day, we live in a daze!

[We can do what we want and be who we want! We are free! But we are limited by our freedoms and restricted to only having them in privacy. Everyone is looking for that pure freedom. They take what we say and scrutinize it when we speak the truth, so our lives are "in a daze," clouded by the lies and hate by others.]

Refrain:
We march, all around til' the sun goes, down night children (night children in a round)
Broken dreams, no sunshine, endless crimes, we long for freedom (for freedom)!
You're free but in your mind, your freedom's in a bind

[Because of what society has deemed as acceptable, this "We," she sings about must do their work in secrecy, as if in the dead of night so no one is made aware, but they long for freedom, or "daylight." You're only free in what you think, but they even try to control that.]

Chorus:
Oh make it rain, ain't a thang in the sky to fall.
(The silver bullet's in your hand and the war's heating up)
And when the truth goes BANG the shouts splatter out
(Revolutionize your lives and find a way out)
And when you're growing down instead of growing up
(You gotta ooo ah ah like a panther)
Tell me are you bold enough to reach for love, for love?
(Na na na...)

[I believe she's talking about the actions when she says "make it rain," instead of money. The opposing side supposidly has a storm waiting for her. Kind of like "yeah? You can make it rain? So, uh... let's see it then. No? Ain't a thing in the sky to fall, huh?" She's saying talk is cheap. The silver bullet refers to a truth that will stop this evil and change the tide of the argument. This war is based on a childish belief and it seems as if people are taking a step back in maturity. Anyone else get the Gay Rights vibe? It makes sense.]

Quite Often Forgotten Lyrics:
He lived in sector 10
He had a friend named Benjamin
Sail away, sail away Susan.

[... I really have nothing for you, here!]

2nd Verse:
So strong, for so long
All I wanna do is sing my simple song
Is it square or round, rich or poor
At the end of day and night all we want is more
I keep my feet on solid ground and use my wings when storms come around
I keep my feet on solid ground for freedom
You're free but in your mind, your freedom's in a bind

[She's fought a long battle and is done fighting. Whether it's "Square or round, rich or poor," and possibly "Gay or Straight," it shouldn't matter. We are all human, but within us all is the divine. Basically, the wing analogy is stating that she is just as much of an angel as anyone else and will make it to heaven. (The gay argument, I think, in how some individuals believe that homosexuals are going to hell. In this case, she's disagreeing.)]
Chorus

Cybernetic Chantdown:
Civil rights, civil war
Hood rat, crack whore
Carefree, nightclub
Closet drunk, bathtub
Out-outcast, weirdo
Stepchild, freak show
Black girl, bad hair
Broad nose, cold stare
Tap shoes, Broadway
T-t-tuxedo, holiday
Creative block, Love song
Stupid words, erased song
G-gun shots, orange house
D-d-dead man walking with a dirty mouth
Spoiled milk, stale bread
Welfare, bubonic plague
Record deal, light bulb
K-keep back kid not corporate thug
Breast cancer, common cold
HIV, lost hope
Overweight, self esteem
Mis-misfit, broken dream
Fish tank, small bowl
Closed minded, dark hold
Cy-cy-cybergirl, droid-droid control
Get away now they trying to steal your soul
Mi-microphone, one-one stage
Tomboy, outrage
Street fight, bloody war
Instigators, third floor
Promiscuous child, broken heart
STD, quarentine
Heroin user, coke head
Fin-final chapter, death bed
Plastic sweat, metal skin
Metallic tears, mannequin
Carefree, night club
Closet drunk, bathtub
White house, Jim Crow
Dir-dirty lies, my-my regards

[The break down of this song lists all of the things society is, believes, or labels her has and the things she's supposed to be made to believe. I think most important would be "Civil rights, civil war," which says we're all supposed to have our own personal rights, but we really don't. Because she's different, she's treated as if she is diseased. But they try to "quarantine," her. This is where the Android Girl bit comes to play. We program Androids. She's nothing more than a robot if she lets people tell her how to be or what to do. I think as some of you stated, it's the "Android" breaking down. It's been told what to believe, but reasoning causes those ideas to short circuit.]

Closing Lullaby:
And when the world just treats you wrong
just come with me and I'll take you home
No need to pack a bag
Who put your life in the danger zone?
You running, drop it like a rolling stone
No time to pack a bag
You just can't stop your heart from hanging on
The old man dies and then a baby's born
Chan, chan, chan, change your life
And when the world just treats you wrong
just come with us and we'll take you home
Shang, shang, shang, shan-gri la
Na na na na na na na na na na na na.

[The lullaby sings of unfairness and the need for those of us who are subjugated to this unfair treatment to stick together. Why pack a bag? We have each other, what else could you need? And there's really no time to prepare. The time to act is now. Yes, it hurts, but no use in fretting. Life is a cycle. Just as sure as we are born, we will die. Just as we are in bad times, good times are sure to come. Change where you are and what you're made to be. You shouldn't have to run or hide who you are. But until that day comes where the "We," is liberated, come with us to Shangri-la, a safe haven.]

That's my take on it.

So, what do you guys think? I absolutely believe it's talking about homosexuality. Possibly the entire album. I'm just saying, listen to Cold War and it becomes clear. Also, the fact that she won't discuss her sexuality. I think she might be gay. This album is a silent silver bullet for the gay rights movement, or anyone else who has to struggle against the majority for their rights.

And if you're wondering, I'm straight. So in no way is my sexuality influencing my idea process. Though I am a major supporter for Civil Rights for everyone.
