Avril Lavigne – Slipped Away Lyrics 15 years ago
I'm really not a fan of Avril, but I have to stick up for her here. Yeah, the song's lyrics are not Shakespearean sonnets gushing over every nitty gritty detail of her grandpa's death and her emotions. It's extremely basic, and I feel that's what makes it powerful. It gets the message across, pure and simple. She could have made it less... 'Pop-esque' by filling in the 'nanananana' bits with something more substantial (or just left those bits without vocals altogether), but otherwise the song is extremely heart-felt and evokes sadness in most of the listeners.

On that note... I didn't realise it was about her grandpa. Here's what I thought it was about at diffrent stages in time

1) A friend she loves dearly commiting suicide (sorry to be morbid, but from personal experience, lyrics like 'I wish I could see you again' and 'I've had my wake-up/Won't you wake up/I keep asking why/And I can't take it/ It wasn't fake' etc tend to make me think of that)

2) A friend/lover/family member died in a car crash ('Won't you wake up'= in a coma, 'It happened you passed by'= happened to pass the singer in their car/bike before the accident, 'There you go/Somewhere,I can't bring you back'= directional, the person was literally travelling somewhere else, then ended up dying and 'going somwhere' where they couldn't simply 'come back')

3) 'Slipped away' implies a slow death. So a friend/lover/family member died of a slow disease (as it turns out, this was actually right, with her grandpa and all...)

Red – Fight Inside Lyrics 15 years ago
I know RED are a Christin band, and I know the true meaning is, in effect, the struggle against sin. I listen to this song whenever I have a moment of insecurity, and while I'm religious, it's not the Christian interpretation that springs to my mind when I hear this. These lyrics best describe the voice inside my head that kicks me down when I can't possibly get any lower, telling me to give up and do things that I wouldn't do in a normal state of mind. I unfortunately have given into this voice at times, because I can't believe that I'd steer myself into danger, harm and sin if my mind is telling me to do whatever the dirty deed is. But 10/10 times, I've been steered in the wrong direction due to my 'enemy/familiar friend'. That is my literal and personal 'fight inside', and that is why I love this song.

The Devil Wears Prada – Louder Than Thunder Lyrics 15 years ago
I love this song! It really gets me, especially the 'I can be better' line- that one one is just so powerful...
I like the Christ interpretation, but I didn't initially make that connection. I actually viewed it as something to do with mentally beating yourself up when important relationships, friendships or generally things in life go wrong.
-First, you want to escape from the noise and conflict ('what would it take, for things to be quiet?' etc),
-Eventually you try to do anything to make the situation and yourself "better" (I know this isn't much/ Are we meant to be empty-handed? I know I could, I coud be better').
-If the problem doesn't come right, even with your efforts, you either believe you've been wronged or you go into a huge guilt phase, saying you didn't deserve what you lost anyway ('I don't think I deserve this')
-You may then feel you were selfish when handling the situation and wish you were less so ('Selflessness, find your way into my heart')
-Finally it hits you- the loss of the important person or thing makes your world a much bleaker, colder place ('All stars could be brighter, all hearts could be warmer')
REALLY far-fetched, but that's how I enterpreted the song initially....
