| Okay, the drug reference is not important to the interpretation of this song. It's not about getting high. It's about the struggle with the broken relationship and her trying to cope with the separation. Obviously people use drugs when emotionally upset and it usually doesn't help, just clouds the mind. The whole song is state of bravado where her confidence in her ability to carry on is so thin that all it takes is just looking down and reality destroys her. | |

I have no idea how anyone got domestic violence out of this song. T&S frequently appear to have very simple melodies and song structure, but as you listen more, the sublime elements explode. To simply take words like "left hook" and "blow by blow sucker punch" in a literal interpretation completely misses the point. Obviously, you haven't really listened or paid attention to T&S lyrics. I'm more inclined to follow DGbaby04's interpretation where the feeling is that of a dissolving relationship. The deep anguish that you can feel all the way to the bone. The feeling like you just got "sucker punched" in the face with a good left hook. The longing to just end it and "take my heart out of my chest" etc. This is a typical theme for T&S, the concept of being left/dumped and the emotional collapse that they experience. |
