You, Me, and Everyone We Know – A Little Bit More Lyrics 15 years ago
it's a company that makes pencils. if you listen to a lot of ymaewk, you might notice that ben is... how should i put this? wary of making solid commitments. he's been burned before, and pencils vs. ink are a bit of a recurring theme representing that uneasiness.

lol this album took some early listening, careful dissection, many repeat listenings, and a few text message brainstorming sessions with my friend nicole, but i've finally got it down to a few words in "a little bit more". i posted my theory in the comments over there if you want to lend an ear and crack ben's code!

if i didn't think he'd die from blushing (so adorable how shy he can get in person when he's so passionate and sensual and intense on stage), i'd gather the courage to tell ben how sexy he is! ;D

it could just be that he's launching into the next word early, but i KNOW he doesn't finish a 2nd "couch". lol i have listened to that section of the song so many times that i'm starting to risk insanity! :P

You, Me, and Everyone We Know – The Puzzle Lyrics 15 years ago
I enjoy picking out Ben's references to other songs almost as much as I like noticing themes of his: fear of commitment/finality described with references to pencils and ink ("she's taking all her notes in pencil 'cause they tend to contradict themselves with half of what they say" in Happy Birthday; "number 2 would be the pencil I'd have to find: Ticonderoga, 10 feet long" & "but sadly, most of all, at the top of my list would be the fear of commitment in my penman's fist" in A Little Bit More; What Ink Can Really Do, etc.), his struggle to form relationships based on more than sex ("'cause I'm just parts, lacking heart, as if that were ever good enough" "because of alcohol, I've shared sixteen beds" "ohhhh...something I can't quite find inside myself; whoahh...so I look for it in someone else" and so so so many more), mentions of fire, even before the van burnt down....

Seconded! Cody Payne from The Dangerous Summer designs merch, and YMAEWK hired him to design/manufacture/distribute a limited edition release of 100 t-shirts to coincide with the release of "So Young, So Insane". Long story short, the shirts sold out in a preorder & everything was paid for, but he never sent out most of them out. Some people did get theirs, but a ton of fans were sending YMAEWK emails saying that they paid & never got their shipment. He seems to think it's funny. Not the type of guy I'd want to spend time with.

"the day's PROVED TO come with its fair share of burns"

1st time: "I'M the tide; we both know I can't stay,
But nothing short of the moon
Could ever PULL me away"

2nd time: "I'M the tide; we both know I can't stay,
But nothing short of the moon
Is gonna roll me away"

probably one of my favorites. it pairs well with "boats and birds" by gregory & the hawk. <3

You, Me, and Everyone We Know – James Brown Is Dead Lyrics 15 years ago
I'm hearing "It's a sure bet you're not breaking the mold" in the choruses, and "Whoahh...so I look for it in someone else" instead of "Love"... The rest of the song talks about getting the idea of love "out of your head" and forget about making lasting relationships because everyone's the same and it's pointless ("what's the point in remembering? it's a sure bet you're not breaking the mold"). I think this is something Ben has a lot of trouble with, if "Colorful Language" can be used as evidence ("'cause I'm just parts, lacking heart / as if that were ever good enough" & "I just wanna feel good tonight").

my friend nicole and i have been picking this album apart, and i realized today that in the previous line, the background vocals clearly say "couch to couch," but ben doesn't put a "ch" sound at the end the second time... It's more of an "st" kind of sound, and there's no "b" between that and "myself"...

long story short, i think ben's interntionally layering the phrases to make the second one hard to decipher (maybe to sneak something in that he needs to get out without being too obvious about it? he's tricky!), and i've got "love living life from couch to couch/???? on myself; content living hand to mouth"

???? = starts with a hard C, followed by an "ah" or "ou" vowel sound, and ending with "st". not sure what comes between those steps. :[

"Once I clean up my mess with it,
My white flag is up."

"I was lost for a while without my style!
I was lost for a while, but IIIII'm back!"

"Once I clean up my mess with-
OH, FORGET IT!"

:] love love LOVE this album.

Ben really is a lyrical genius, and I mean that with all of the weight and sincerity it deserves. He has the ability to build a phrase that at once conveys two or three or more completely separate ideas and emotional responses, and better yet, he has the passion and vocal ability to deliver it in such a way that no one else could come close to his level of performance. Normally you'd expect a person who's been through as much shit as he has to be cynical and closed off, but here we have a man who can compress one of the most life-altering and traumatic experiences of his life into four short lines. He bares his soul in every show he plays. I admire the hell out of him.
