I think everyone needs to get off the whole "it's about how current mainstream rap lacks depth." The song goes way beyond that. The song is about Lupe himself (he said that in an interview) and he draws on it from a personal level. Before the album, he lost his father and his business partner, mentor, and close friend went to jail. So, the chorus is saying "No one will save you anymore," meaning Lupe has to stand on his own now and do it alone. He also has said after all the death and loss, he felt he had no one close friendship-wise around him and he felt alone, which fits in with that. So, it goes on to say, "what you rappin' about," as in what is he doing now, not just rap, and what meaningful things can he do now in this time. Then he says, "too worried about the words of the people it's weird to," so he needs to be himself, especially now. "But I'd never feel that again." He's pushed that emotion into his work and he is letting it guide him. He then says it's all right because they'll meet again. God will "turn [them] back into beginners" in the "holy apartments." And the shout outs are showing he loves everyone around him and he's happy, even in this time that he has to grow up on his own. "Now we got just one more to go..." which is himself. The song reflects what he's feeling inside, how he must deal with it, what he thinks, and the deep emotions running within him. It is a very introspective song where the lyrics cannot be held to concrete interpretation. It goes beyond the literal meaning, and deals with the nature of his mind and emotion. |
