| For me, and I know she talked about the meaning/process of this song coming into being and the industry, but for me it’s interpreted as sacrifice for a deeper kind of survival; a transformation through a stronghold. Yes she’s trapped into something, committed herself to some benefit at a devastating cost, but transforms from the lamb (rabbit) to the lion (knife) to cut through/face the confines of an order to give her true self life, even through a death of some kind (the ultimate sacrifice). The ultimate sacrifice being the regaining of control on her terms. | |

| My interpretation of this song is someone asking another to stay awake spiritually. Meaning look at me, look at us, we can be anything together we dream to be if we just don’t let go. One is holding it all back and had not crossed that bridge from a spiritual perspective of what the love and connection could be, but the speaker is saying I can’t do that, I can only love you with my whole soul. Stay awake with me; I just can’t let you be. Their songs all have an otherworldly vibe, this is also that way, but also feels human to me. Relatable, as if you’re waiting for your soul mate or twin soul to come around. | |

I think Melissa's gift is taking on deep philosophical topics without coming off as pious. This song, to me (and I hope she reads this) is really about recognizing the nature of the universe. As humans we like to think we have power (kings on ant hills) to imprison and free things. Many beautiful things are created and freed under pressure/underground and when they surface or freed they just take another form of imprisonment. Diamonds grow underground are freed and then placed in a setting to represent forever (marriage is another form of imprisonment) theoretically. We can free any form you like but is that to our growths benefit or is it detrimental. Do we really have the power to imprison when and free anything? It's all relative. |

I agree with robwyattfan in that the narrator is suffering and wants to switch places with the subject. Personally I could interpret this to mean she seeks to change places with either a deceased or dying lover. It would be easier for her to make a deal with God and cross over physically than to struggle through the hill of life emotionally.
