| I went to see Anberlin this past weekend in Des Moines, and Stephen Christian said this song was inspired by Darth Vader. I swear I'm not joking. Marinate on that one for awhile. :) | |

Okay, on the song's merits by itself, it's not super great. However, I love it. Here's why: My high school sweetheart moved away early on in HS, and he ended up getting a girl pregnant during his senior year. Their parents pushed them to get married and right after he graduated, they did. I traveled to his hometown a few days before the wedding, and even though I had never met the girl before, she was a total snot to me. Jon tried to keep things light but she was just hell-bent on hating me. As the wedding got closer, it became pretty clear that almost nobody wanted them to get married, including the bride and groom themselves, but Jon thought he was doing the right thing by standing by her. His parents and grandparents kept asking me if I was going to "speak now" when it came to that point. I didn't, though I definitely thought about it. So they got married, and ended up divorcing after 9 months. Anyway, I later found out from his mother that Jon used to talk about me - a LOT - and that the bride didn't want me there. He later told me that he'd hoped I WOULD "speak now," and that's a big reason why he invited me. I was tempted for a moment to speak up, but I'm so glad I didn't. I've been married to my wonderful husband for over 11 years, and Jon ended up getting married and divorced again, and is getting ready to get married for a third time. This song reminds me of that time and also about how blessed I am that I DIDN'T "speak now." :) |

Okay, this is totally subjective but what I take from the song is this - she was with someone that, although she loves them, she knows for whatever reason that they can't be together. And so as they separate and when they're apart, she thinks about what life could have been and she imagines what life would be like now if they were together. There are probably good reasons why they aren't together and she probably knows that if they were, life wouldn't be anything like what she dreams ("I want you as the dream, not the reality,") and as she sees him with someone else, she knows that it truly is a dream. |

This was from an interview that Stephen did with absolutepunk.com in August: I think, again in life, it’s not always perfect. Your friends and those you love are not always going to be perfect. At the end of the day we’re all just human, so for me it happened with a family member. “To the Wolves” is actually about a family member who completely took some of my beliefs and who I am at the very core and completely obliterated me. They trashed who I was, who I wanted to be, what I was doing with my life, and completely decimated me. For me, that song is about friends or family who turn their back and alienate and destroy you, using words or whatever means. I didn’t make that really obvious in the song. I wanted to make it a little more broad so that other people can relate. Again, it’s going back to the coming-of-age book where people are going to hurt you. Your family is going to put you down. They’re going to torment you, make fun of you, abandon you. That’s what that song is and where that abandonment and betrayal comes from. |
