I theres a Jekkel-Hyde undertone to the entire the whole song. One side evil, one good. neither knows what the other does. The evil side burnt down the town/mountain and the good one is confused as to why they think he did it and why he has to un away. This evil side was brought forth by the anger that built up inside the good, probably from abuse from a family member or the members of the town. This is what i get. |

The way i see it. It is a man who has lost a wife or girlfriend, and before she died he had written a letter to her in a sort of thanks for helping him become who he is today. In the letter he sees her shadow and sees it fade away, representing her passing. The chorus is the letter: If you fall I'll catch, if you love I'll love, and so it goes, my dear, don't be scared, you'll be safe, this I swear. If you only love me. These are the seven 'lies' he had written. he calls them lies because he was unable to uphold them and feels responsible for her death. He burns the letter and feels mierable because he was not able to protect her like he promised to. This is what I get out of it, not a pen. beautiful song either way |

The whole idea behind the song is quite simple around the time USA was first discovered, they were giving land away to whichever white got there first. The guy goes there, makes enough money to provide for his family back home (presumably England or Ireland) and finally races for the land and wins it. And they all live happily ever after. On a personal note, I dont think this album is better or worse than their previous ones, I just think its different. A band cant have the same sound all the way through. They have to vary it once in a while. I like it anyway. |
