| Jack Johnson – Hope Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| Jack is extremely spiritual and I think he has been touched by God. As for this song, I think some people are just so far off. It's definitely not going against God. I really think that the main point of this song is sin. Nobody is immune to sin. You can put many sins in there and it will work: alcoholic, heavy drug abuser, adulterer, greedy executive, etc. All of these things will lift you up at first and then let you down, sending you spiraling down until you hit rock bottom (defeated). People tend to "get back up" only after they have hit rock bottom. It will teach you to learn what you're afraid of (God, love), after it takes away all that you learned to love (family, money, lust, greed, etc.). You don't have to hold your head (want of worldly possessions and being popular) higher than your heart (God, ultimate truth, your soul, love). You better hope you're not alone (you better hope that God, angels, someone, is there to get you on your feet and teach you what life is really about/the reason we are living/the lies of this world. "You're shadow walks faster than you," I think is referring to your sinful/selfish self, your inner devil, once started on a road to sin/destruction, it is hard to stop because it absorbs you so quickly. You better get away from it while it is "on the move" before it "takes away all that you learn to love." | |
| Jack Johnson – They Do They Don't Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| He starts off stating that we are human and have sin, never had a chance nor wanted to be good (screaming in silent, etc.) We tell ourselves bad things are o.k. and believe that we will be fine if we do them for the purpose of our own gain. To listen is to learn, then too much is what we deserve = the rules of life are in the Bible (God told us) and it's our fault that we are disobeying it (not listening) and so we deserve this corrupt society/broken world we are living in. We are not trustful and do not do as we say. The devil tricked us into eating the fruit by lying and offering superficial rewards. In doing so, we no longer can distinguish what is good and what is evil, what is real and what is superficial. (truth - helping others, making the world a better place, loving, doing good things) People who rely on superficial things (greed, money, appearances, power) and do not see the big picture (God, what is really important) are being tricked by the devil (serpent's ruse). With all of God's rules and disobedient us, our future may never get better. Our future may be doomed. Our world may get put back together, but it will not be the same as it was. Our current way of living is not meant to be forever, a new way of living needs to come about. Our old traditions and the way we are/were will not get us anywhere. | |

But youre so busy changing the world Just one smile and you can change all of mine We share the same soul I think this part plays off of the idea that when we smile at someone or do something nice, it starts an unending chain of people that do the same thing you did to them, hence changing the world. That also goes in with sharing the same soul. |
