As many others previously stated, I also believe this song is about an ascendance into a form of divinity from the shackles and restrictions of the physical universe to something far more spectacular. This could be anything from unlocking parts of the mind previously blocked off to consciousness that shed everything about everything into a new light to a sort of Faith-based epiphany, whether it is finding God or disproving God is up to the listener. To me the underlining message is to keep expanding. Don't be content with what you already know. Instead keep spiraling into new and broader areas. |

I honestly don't understand why so many Christians think same sex marriage is wrong. I'm Christian, but my Faith is based around my realization that I can always be wrong. As far as the Bible goes, I understand that it was obviously inspired by the words of God but I still think about one little fact: Human error and ignorance. The Bible was literally written by human hands and humans obviously aren't perfect. I don't rule out, even entertain the possibility that what God said to those who wrote the Bible may have been taken out of context or even fabricated. I choose to believe that if God is flawless, than He will love you no matter what. It doesn't matter if you're homosexual, heterosexual, bisexual, male, or female. You're still human and, I choose to believe, made in His image.
Call me a heretic, Agnostic, Atheist, etc. Frankly I don't care if you see me as against what God said. I know what I believe and why I believe it. If I'm wrong, I have no problem repenting.
In a more Humanistic way, consider this: Why would someone consciously CHOOSE to be gay when they would be ridiculed, shunned, or even ousted from society and Heaven? Embrace others as you would like to be embraced. |

To me this song is about someone who is trying to prevent an apocalypse of some kind but fails. It doesn't have to be in the literal sense. It could be about a relationship or just an event of their life. As they fail the radiation is like a metaphor for the scars they obtained through failure and it will eventually kill them. And now this apocalypse has happened they have to adapt to survive as long as they can, but they will still be radioactive. |

I saw these guys live in STL on 5/25/12 and on the screen behind the band it showed pills like falling during the refrain and in a few parts it showed pill bottles with "happiness", "beauty", etc. on the labels. It was one of the coolest things I've ever seen! That really confirmed my opinion about how people try to "Californiacate" themselves to become the perfect person when they're really just destroying themselves, hence the drug reference. |

By the way, if anyone likes punk bands, I know saying that sounds ridiculous on a post of a punk band's lyrics, I recommend Amber Pacific particularly their song Poetically Pathetic. It has an acoustic version as well that's also EXTREMELY good. Plus Amber Pacific is a great band. |

Honestly I think this song is about suicide. As for the "The killer in me is the killer in you" I think someone he loved committed suicide and now he's contemplating it. For "Disarm with a smile" it may be someone stops with a smile so it disarms him of the object he is going to use. In the refrain I think he's looking back on his childhood and how carefree it was and now everything's going to hell so he is contemplating suicide. As the years burn things just keep going downhill and he accepts his choice. |

@miml16. Dude, if people label you, then they're douchebags and they don't deserve you and you're time if you're a good person. People label me and look at me as a freak everyday, but I do my best at not letting it get to me. It does, at times, but I know if I keep my eyes on the prize, Heaven or at least the utopia after death, it'll all make sense. I'm "Christian", but I have no denomination. All I know is what I need to know. I know that the whole "higher power" thing makes absolutely no sense at this point in my life, but I feel it's not supposed to. It wouldn't be called Faith if there was proof.
Basically keep who you are, who you aren't, and where you want to go in your mind and you'll get there. If some things about you need to change, change them. If life was easy it wouldn't be worth living. |

"Religion" is merely a man-made organization of people believing in their interpretation of God but no matter what "religion" it is the goal is always the same: power. Just look at every organized religion throughout the world. Christianity, especially Catholicism, is a parallel to a feudal hierarchy. The pope is a king, the cardinals are dukes, bishops and arch-bishops are barons, priests are earls, and the congregation are the peasants that make up the majority but contain very little power. The Muslims have 2 groups, the Sunnis and Shittes who have been fighting ever since they began as individual groups on which ideology is right. To me this song isn't just about the schism between the Catholic and Orthodox churches, it is about the schism of people over religion.
I'm Christian and that's as far as I go. I don't buy into the whole "you need a priest, pastor, etc." to tell you how to worship. Isn't that exactly against what Jesus taught? |

I first heard this song on Man On Fire and I began a mission to find the name so I could download it. When I found it I was so stoked! and This was indeed a perfect song for that movie. It sounds soothing at parts but when that really grungy, heavy guitar comes in I can just see Denzel saying "I'm gonna do what I do best: I'm going to kill them all." Such a badass line. |

I can see this song being about Jesus and martyrs who claim to die for Him but when their time comes they're shocked.
On the note about Jesus not existing there is significant evidence from numerous non-Christian/Jewish sources that give vivid details of the man and how the Gospels parallel what they saw when they saw Jesus. As for the argument of God being eternal and as the Creator without a beginning or an end, we as humans are so caught up in what we know and don't know. There are things that will be complete enigmas to us until we die and are judged. All I can say for the people who are Atheist, Agnostic, etc. just let go of your desire to see things your way so you can be right. Abandon the proud, and stubborn mentality to be right and just let go of what you see and embrace what you feel and believe and if you feel nothing then you're not trying hard enough. Dig until you find what you're meant to find. I have no clue what anyone else is supposed to find in themselves but if you try hard enough you'll find it. It won't be overnight either, it could take decades but just remember you'll get there. |

I think it's about depression along with a few other people. He can't believe who he has become and reached a "new low". By saying he's been mostly down he's saying he can't escape his depression no matter how he's tried to escape hence the right, left, up, and down. It's a great song and the rest of this album is just as good. |

I interpret this song as someone who sees how utterly screwed up society is and tries change it any way he can and feels that he is doing it with God in mind. I maintain that if a person can bring themself to cry, even unintentionally, they are far stronger than that person who is a stone and WON'T cry. This song as well as a lot of other Staind songs do that to me. If I'm at home, around family, or close friends, I can cry. I know that when you show your flaws and vulnerabilites to the people who truely matter to you, the people who will stand by your side when no one else does, and the people who show you their flaws are not only people. They're gifts to you and you're a gift to them. This song makes me cry. Don't be afraid of being vulnerable, just do it. |

Jackls I have a couple of comments. I think it's awesome you're a Christian again, but I'm not in total agreement with everything you said. I believe having a relationship with God doesn't require a church, or priests/pastors, or any type of median, it just requires you and God. I really don't go to the Church I go to that often. (I guess I'm Baptist because it's a Baptist Church) I also don't believe God broke Paul. He made him. I tell you what, today is a shitty day for me, but it shows me that life isn't all good. It's not fair. I came to the conclusion that without God we are all evil and in every one of us is a battle between God and Satan. When bad shit happens to us and our faith is shaken, Satan wins that battle. When bad shit happens to us and we pick ourselves up and dust ourselves off, God and us win. If we ultimately lose, Satan has our souls and takes us with him to Hell. If we win, we get the best reward ever: Heaven. We all have the capability to achieve the ultimate reward. Whether we accept the challenge or not is up to us. |

I'm Christian and proud of it, but I don't necessarily like your typical "Christian Rock" band that the only way you can interpret their song is that it's about God and God alone. That's why I love Switchfoot. They have songs that are pretty clear they're about God and your relationship with God, but to the untrained ear they sound like they aren't. This is one of my favorite songs ever! After 8 years it still gives me chills.
I believe it's about a man who has had hard life and decided to go far away "now that we're here so far away" from his previous life. After he ran, he finds someone who he truly loves and can't believe he's with her. He feels that he is able to show her his life and how screwed-up it is and through the struggles and pain in his life he's finally found meaning and the mistakes go away from his mind because they don't matter anymore. Beautiful song. |

I love this song. I think it's about a person seeing all the hurt and pain in their life and they're not living, but surviving. As they see this, they ask life and God to be softer and reduce the pain and crap that comes with life even if it is selfish. They know their pain is nothing compared to Jesus' as he was in agony on the Cross, but they still want an easier life.

I am a Christian and I understand your point of view. Due to horrifying occurences in my life, I was a devout Athiest for years. If you don't believe in God, you are damning yourself to a life and afterlife of misery. I started to believe again about a year ago and I feel myself becoming less and less depressed.
Also, I have come to realize that life is a test. If it was easy, it wouldn't be worth living. Nothing worth anything comes easy. God chooses the strongest of people to test the hardest because He knows they can handle it and teach others through their experiences. Don't turn away from God because you think He isn't there. I strongly reccomend you read the Footprints in the Sand story. |

I don't mean to be one of those people who are like "OMG this song applies to me!", but I feel that way. I don't sleep well due to stress and other factors.
When I fall asleep, I am woken by the slightest of noises or disturbances. I sleep and average of 5-6 hours a night. If I slept without waking, I would probably sleep 9 hours a night.
I think this song is about someone who can't sleep due to painful memories, stress, and/or criticism from others.

This is, without a doubt, my favorite song. I believe it is about someone comtemplating suicide and decides against it because they see that it is a permenant solution to a temporary problem. I often feel this way which makes this song have strong sentimental value to me. Life is a learning process that prepares us for the afterlife. I believe God watches all of us; we just have to listen and see. If you have suidical thoughts, remember: You're not alone. |
