The title gives it away a little: Rock Journalism issues. I don't know when the song was written, although someone said on here 1991. So, that may have been before all the Vanity Fair issues. I think Cobain had general issues with the entire media set up though. To me, it reads as a reminder to remember who you are and not to doubt what you think you are, even if you are unsure of yourself. In Cobain's case, he had to hear who/what he was from everybody and the entire world had an opinion about him. |

I've got a version from their EP, and he refrains from saying 'you'll die like me' until the end. My interpretation has it that the song is ironic. The fact that the band now may be celebrities highlights this also, with the dying concept. It's saying we will ALL die the same, so who gives a fuck? I thought it said 'our ways' instead of always...haha, damn. that was going to be my back up for the irony. Being the point that they say 'why cant you see...our ways?' is just as stubborn as jocks saying 'why can't they just be like us?'...but, i guess that wasn't meant to be. |

It might sound blunt for such cryptic lyrics, but maybe the 'queens and court jesters' could literally represent those in a jury. Running with the idea of rape, the fact that no matter what 'justice prevails' you can never get back what is lost... maybe not just a court setting/trial, but just an idea. |

My version (at least) has 'if you fuck yourself' and 'the clue that came to you'. It's from the 20th anniversary Bleach album and has it live....amazing. Anyway. I think the main thing I'd like to bring up is that it might be a song aimed at a lot of things. God, for one, as previous lyrics had this perspective. But Cobain might have changed the meaning to something on a completely new level that would show poetical genius...again, the idea I can put forward can be thought of as 'overly analytical', but although Kurt (or Kurdt) said he hated people trying a 'second-rate Freudian analysis' of his stuff, he himself was guilty of this. Cobain was a man of contradictions. The original version blaitantly mentions God. All well and good. But it also depends when he wrote this. If this was post-Tracy, maybe this may be a reflection of self-hatred of the confining/restrictive relationship she had him in. He was in total control where he paid no bills, and did nothing other than play music and 'wallow in his shit', but it would be trashed to the point where it might feel like a 'laundry room' because of the clothes and shit. By changing it from God to 'He', maybe he means the position he gave himself in the relationship. This would mean that he would be acting in the position of power that God has, similar to how a trusted/loyal girlfriend would treat her boyfriend. Cobain would hate to think of himself as a god because of his Buddhist/Jainian religious perspectives, so it would be another song of self-disgust at taking control of another being. This is a little farfetched..also, it is possible that it is just about his animals...but, maybe even in that circumstance, replace Tracy with his animals, and that power he had over their existence. He may have felt very sorry for them to live with such a slob! |

I respect that this is a cover, and all credit to Shocking Blue...but Kurt took this song, and fucked the shit out of its grunge-hole in the best way possible. Reading over that, it sounds like an immature statement, but I do mean it in the way that it was taken to such an extent that it was still recognisable to the original, but something amazing in it's own way (as all covers should do). Secondly, I would have to disagree that Kurt wouldn't feel any connection to the lyrics of this song because he didn't write them. From what I can fathom from my readings, he was an avid fan of music, both Pop and Punk. These lyrics could possibly encompass his feelings towards Tracy (his girlfriend at the time of this songs launch as their debut single through Sub-Pop). Who can ever know....you can't blame the drugs TOO much at this stage, because he pretty damn clean during these earlier days, except for the occasional heavy binge and what he did during his teens. But yeah, like I said...who can ever know. |

Although everyone has seems to have arrived as close as we all can to understanding the song, I think I'd like to give one comment to open up some thought. I havent looked over every single page, but I don't think that 'All in all is all we are' as a line that finishes the song with heavy repetition has been looked at as much as it could. Looking over what I have, would it be fair to suggest that 'All in all' is reflecting that society is merely a bunch of people. And he is 'all apologies', so everyone can be no more, or no less, than him, because that's 'all we are'. As a finishing statement to everybody from his past and who didn't recognise the band for what they stood for (as they were regularly taken out of context). This may have been covered already...I would then be apologising if i accidently stole someones idea there. Also, 'choking on her ashes'...why female? |

At least this discussion hasn't taken on the Courtney debate... lets leave that one out, just for this one. Reading over the comments so far, the only idea I'd like to put forward is that amongst the lyrics and simplicity of the song, Cobain seems to be singing about a serious matter (in light of his history, as I'm sure many people on here are). The song seems - to me - to be reflective of childhood in the way it is sung and the words used (common with Nirvana stuff). Also... it might sound like a weird thing to say. But maybe there is some Karma element in this song too? seeing he 'kicked and screamed', and then later on he 'couldn't chew my meat good' and also hurt/killed his toe....maybe he feeling responsible for the events that occurred in his life? or, at least as a child, he might of (which is common amongst young children whose parents divorce) |
