Gotye – Somebody That I Used To Know Lyrics 14 years ago
I think this song is awesome because it's one of those ones where you can call it like you see it, but it's still personally applicable to a number of relationship situations. I think it's basically about a guy that either dumps a girl or is involved in some kind of mutual break up and is feeling alright about it, until the girl decides she needs a clean break from him and then he can't handle it despite being certain he could before. I think it's so unique because this concept can also be applied to a guy that was dumped. The line: " Told myself that you were right for me, but felt so lonely in your company" can be relatable to anyone really in love with someone that they're actively involved with, but where the other person just isn't as into it on any level. However, it goes back to being applicable to a guy that dumped the girl due to the reasons Kimbra cites, but still wants to be friends and realizes he can't have it both ways. I've seen a lot of people; friends, family members, and individuals I've been in relationships with, that don't quite understand that when you are the dumpee most people need a clean break to really heal. I feel like Kimbra's solo really sums up the message for either party ( The Goyte dumped Kimbra group, or the Kimbra dumped Goyte group) because if he dumped her it could cite a reason for why things didn't work out ( He was still hung up on somebody that he used to know, or she broke up with him because of that reason) or the fact as to why she had no choice but to cut him off because he couldn't get over her even though they were supposed to be just friends. Great complex song!

KT Tunstall – Other Side Of The World Lyrics 15 years ago
I hate to be some kind of nay sayer but I think in this case it's really a matter of " If it looks like a duck, and sounds like a duck, it's a duck" in that I think if you take the lyrics/video literally at their most obvious, this song is clearly about a long distance relationship. " Over the sea and far away, she's waiting like an iceberg, waiting to change" kind of sums up the amount of distance, clearly as does "You're the other side of the world to me." But I truly think the clincher is " and can you still love me, when you can't see me anymore?" I think the video further helps to illustrate the long distance concept in that if you've lived in the U.S. and U.K. as I have, you notice the little things, so based on the stuff in the background, it sets up the fact she lives in the U.K. and he lives in the U.S. or some other country. I think the scenes in which it looks like they're interacting just demonstrate that even though you're on opposite sides of the world you can still be living the same life without each other. I've dealt with LDR twice, in that when I lived in America I dated someone in the U.K. and all the experiences were exactly the same as in the video, and then when I moved back to the U.K. I was dating someone in the U.S. and it was still the same. Plus, thanks to globalization when I'm walking down the street and I see a pizza hut/KFC I don't even feel like I even left home to move to another country till I remember that I left a girl behind.
