i love this song! "am i your possession?/am i in demand?" - best two lines! i agree with most people here; elly is the "obsessor" who feels like she's in the quicksand whenever this other person is around. the first verse describes the tension between them, the second verse describes how elly's unsure of what her place is in the relationship ("what's my position?/i don't understand/am i your possession? am i demand?") and then finally, the bridge is when she realizes that this other person is no good for her, no matter how much he/she gives elly this "quicksand" feeling ("all you do is push me back in the dark"). as for whether the "upsettor" is a man or woman... i'm unsure. it seems like a woman from some of the lyrics ("it seems you have forgotten/about your man") but i'm not sure, because in interviews elly said that the entire album was about one person, and other songs make me think it's about a guy. hm. also, for all those debating whether she's gay, straight, etc. she said in an interview (copied & pasted directly from http://www.newsoftheworld.co.uk/fabulous/celebs/710159/la-roux.html): "I don't have a sexuality. I don't feel like I'm female or male. I don't belong to the gay or straight society, if there is such a thing. I feel like I'm capable of falling in love with other people. I'm not saying I'm bisexual, I'm just sexual!" |

personally, i think this song is about liking someone a lot and then all of a sudden you're over it ("as if by magic/thoughts of you are gone"). there are some moments where she still has this yearning: ("and in a parallel universe/it's me you can't resist" and the ending part "you say i'm a rose-tinted lover, come on/you know i'll never love another/i won't stay a lonely lover for long")... i also agree with azpoo about how she's a bit delusional and that perhaps everything is in her mind (hence making up "parallel universes" and "my mind keeps playing tricks"). however there are clearly many different opinions on this song. and after all, that's what music is about--interpreting it as how YOU want to interpret it. at least, that's what it is to me. |

according to the digital booklet that came with the digital version of la roux's cd from itunes, the first verse should be "leaves/please be a light filter/shine/make me a shelter..." and, as A.M pointed out before, the end of the first verse should be "all the shadows that i walk in/are just my volatile second skin" the first verse: she's vulnerable. she needs someone/something to be a filter, to make her a shelter. she feels exposed (search party, floodlight on my face), and her shadows - her past - are her "volatile second skin" - it was a changing time. chorus: her past shows her mistakes, maybe someone's messed with her, but she knows from her experiences now, and this can protect her in future relationships. not exactly sure what "my directions are distractions/when you're ready, come into the light" means. second verse: i get a very specific and interesting image from this. she needs help finding something and needs a pathway cut out for her - maybe she's confused about what's going on ("only time is a lover's guide"). the imagery in this section is great! |
