The Kills – Fuck the People Lyrics 14 years ago
I think this song is about Florence Rey from the point of view of the crime. The crime is saying "fuck the people."

You wanna warnin'
You got a warnin'
Stab your back

^I think that means she wanted a warning before she got caught, she got a warning that the cops were after them (the car chase, the sirens), and the "stab your back"/betrayal is about the crime betraying her to the cops instead of allowing her to get away with it.

"Fuck the people" is the crime saying to her, who gives a fuck about the people? Do whatever you want to do even if other people get hurt, etc.

Bet you somethin'
I can get your mouth shut

^That part means (in my interpretation) that the crime believes it can get her to keep her mouth shut and not say anything which it does because Florence Rey is well-known for not speaking about the crimes she was involved with.

I think it's about sex. Scared to have sex. Maybe losing one's virginity or having sex with someone for the first time with that specific person. Obviously they're in bed. Trusting the speed, loving the fear. The music is the passion/orgasm/etc. The burning spear - his genitals are on fire ;-)

I think you're taking dedgrrlsdance's comment too seriously. They didn't say it goes against feminism to do your hair and wear makeup. I think the point they were trying to make is that a lot of females spend a ton of time on their appearance, but they're still really unhappy with the way they look. In other words, it's perfectly fine to wear makeup and do your hair, but maybe we shouldn't be so hard on ourselves.

The Raveonettes – Breaking Into Cars Lyrics 14 years ago
I think the beginning of the song is about a crush the person has on someone else. The person wants to beat everyone else at catching the other person's attention. I think the middle of the song is about their relationship - the fireworks the person feels, the excitement, or in this case "crash into the stars." The ignoring/teardrops part of the song is about the end of the relationship. The other person is no longer interested in them.

I'm not sure what "I'm breaking into cars" is supposed to mean.

OR the entire song could be about a crush on a person.

Yeah, because you know P!nk's motives.

It's a common misconception that the amount of clothes a woman wears relates to women's rights. For some people, clothes are a cultural thing. For some people, clothes are a personal preference for comfort. For some people, clothes are a way to express themselves. For some people, clothes are a way to impress other people. Etc. If a woman WANTS to wear a skimpy outfit for herself, not wearing a skimpy outfit wouldn't make her a good supporter of rights for women.

Styx – The Grand Illusion Lyrics 15 years ago
What I mean is, money/material things can't buy complete happiness. They can buy some happiness. For example, if you have the money to buy a book, CD, game, or something else that you like, it can make you happy to an extent. But if you don't have love of any sort in your life, you probably won't be fully happy.

Styx – The Grand Illusion Lyrics 15 years ago
I think it's saying that money and the things that money can buy don't buy happiness. But people, the media, etc. try to convince people that money and material things can buy happiness. They try to make you feel like you need their product to be happy/successful, and they encourage you to try to have more, more, more. More than your neighbors, more than your friends, more than strangers, just more in general. It's to the point that many people are pretty much in competition with each other. I know it's cliche, but things such as family, friends, and art have so much more meaning and value than material goods.

"It's the song I hate"

Does it mean that the song of hate is the song that they hate?

Or is there another explanation?

Not knowing the answer is bothering me.

I thought of one other possible meaning for those few lines.

Poetry's in motion, not in mind - Beautiful things are happening but not in people's minds. Maybe nature is beautiful, but people are uninspired.
Poetry's in motion but not in my mind - I think this is basically the same thing except saying that she's lacking inspiration.

The Wallflowers – Sleepwalker Lyrics 15 years ago
This is what I think:

He’s in a relationship, and he's in a dreamy mood about it - thinking that everything is going well and that everything in the relationship is wonderful. The ‘sleepwalker’ part of him is the part that's aware (while he's dead asleep dreaming) that love is not always good, and maybe a little part of him is even suspicious of this particular relationship. Sam Cooke is now thought to have been murdered as someone already said... So the song is saying that Sam Cooke didn't know that love can be dangerous, love can hurt you, people can fake loving you, people can fake being interested in you, or that love can be bad in general.

"Maybe I could be the one they adore
That could be my reputation
It's where I'm from that lets them think I'm a whore
I'm an educated virgin"

Maybe it's his reaction to people wanting him (or famous people in general) for shallow reasons such as his fame, money, and/or sex. He's possibly saying that some people assume all famous people are into having a lot of meaningless sex, but he wants more in a relationship than that, so he's likely to get hurt. He can be a bit of a romantic, so he needs the aware part of him to protect him from getting too caught up in the relationship and getting hurt.

I think the beginning of the song is about the beginning of their relationship, and then later it's about how they've been together for awhile - "Usually when things has gone this far, People tend to disappear, No one will surprise me unless you do" They're used to relationships not lasting that long, so this person is the only person who could possibly surprise them by staying in a lasting relationship.

Conor Oberst – Souled Out!!! Lyrics 15 years ago
"Not all my boys believe in science
Stretching truth in the promised land"

I think those lines could work in either the immigration or the heaven interpretations.

For the immigration interpretation, he could be saying that not all of them believe that they'll be blocked out of the U.S. Instead, they're stretching the truth by saying that God will find a way to get them into the U.S. And then Conor is saying that they won't be getting in.

For the heaven interpretation, not all of them believe in the big bang theory/evolution/scientific principles of creation and whatnot. They're more spiritual people, and these particular people he's singing about believe in heaven. They might be stretching the truth by saying that they'll get into heaven when general beliefs about heaven indicate that they won't be getting into heaven.

The sold out/souled out thing is pretty cool even though I don't know exactly what he means by it. My guess for the immigration meaning is that the U.S. officials who are anti-immigration believe that the U.S. is already full of souls - they believe that there's no more room for immigrants from Mexico. For the heaven meaning, it might that heaven is already full of people.... I don't know. Any ideas on this?

I meant to say that he doesn't understand why she's happy about it because she's missing out on a good relationship. I think the line "Who knows why you wanna lay there and revel in your abandon" makes sense. Not everybody is happy when they feel as if they have to live like a refugee. When I think of refugees, I think of people like Anne Frank and slaves of the U.S. fleeing north. But this woman seems to take delight in it. My guess as to why she's happy is because she feels as if she's winning and she feels secure when she plays it safe and runs away every time a relationship gets serious. But he doesn't understand why she does it because she's missing out on a good relationship.

Metric – Collect Call Lyrics 15 years ago
I think the song is about a relationship, and she's saying that she's a lazy dancer in a relationship - comaring a relationship to dancing. She puts forth so much effort, but the other person also needs to put forth effort - to meet her halfway so to speak.

If the fire's out baby
How you gonna keep me warm
Supposing you let me
With the door wide open no one can leave - If the door is left wide open then they would be able to leave. I think the next line - I know it's a lie I want it to be true - is saying that it's a lie that no one can leave. Since the door is wide open, either one of them can leave the relationship. I imagine they're in a warm house, and the house is colder than average since the fire is out, but it's even colder outside of the house. In literal terms, the spark is out of their relationship, but it would feel even more lonely to be in no relationship.

I'm a lazy dancer
When you move I move with you - She's a lazy partner in a relationship. She doesn't try very hard. She just goes wherever it seems to be going. If he's really into the relationship, she'll go along with him and be more serious. If he grows apart from her, she'll go along with that as well. She's a passive partner in their relationship, or any romantic relationship.

If somebody's got soul
You gotta make them move
Make them move - If you meet somebody with soul, you have to make them put effort into the relationship. You can’t just let them get away from you.

Metric – Combat Baby Lyrics 15 years ago
The song can be taken two ways. The first way is that someone who intellectually challenges the narrator by debating left and the narrator wants that person back because everyone else has no passion, no energy, no desire to fight her. The second interpretation is a shout-out to rebellious music of the past especially that of punk rock.

We used to leave the blue lights on and there was a beat - I’m not sure if the blue lights are the lights they might have during a concert or party, or what exactly that means.

Ever since you have been gone it’s all caffeine-free - Ever since the major wave of punk rock faded out, so-called punk rock music has been lacking in energy.

Faux punk fatigues (or fatigue) - If it’s fatigue it means the fatigue/weariness/exhaustion/lack of energy of people who pretend to be punk. It’s the lack of energy that is characteristic of fake punks. If it’s ‘fatigues’ it means fake punk uniforms — uniforms are contradictory to the individualistic value of punks. A lot of fake punks wear what they think people with punk values are supposed to wear, but they fail miserably.

Said it all before - The lyrics in the so-called punk rock songs have already been said before. The new bands aren’t coming up with any original ideas.

They try to kick it, their feet fall asleep - This could mean two things. One, it could mean that they try to fight against their lack of energy and that they try to fight against their lack of originality. Two, it could mean that they try to fight against the powers that be and/or society in general. Either way their feet fall asleep — for the first interpretation, they continue to lack energy and they don’t have the energy to come up with new ideas. For the second interpretation, they lack the energy to get anything done, to really fight against society/government/etc., to passionately voice their opinions.

Get no harm done no - As I said, the faux punks don’t have the energy and passion in their music.

None of them want to fight me - I think that the point of view of the song is from the point of view of punk rock fans. They see the faux punk rockers as not wanting to debate and not having the passion/energy to disagree on the fine points of their opinions. For example, many of the original punk rockers agreed that the government sucks, but they don’t all agree on the same ways to fix that problem.

Combat baby come back baby - “Combat baby” is punk rock music and the artists that make up the genre. Also, it can be rebellious underground music in general and those artists. Metric wants punk rock and rebellious underground music to come back. One other thing — The Clash had an album called Combat Rock.

Fight off the lethargy - Metric thinks that punk rockers feel lethargic either from trying to change things or from trying to change things but feeling as if they got nowhere which left them feeling hopeless, and they’re telling them to fight off their lethargy. -OR- They’re saying to come back and help them fight off other people’s lethargy, possibly the lethargy in fake punk music.

Don’t go quietly - Metric doesn’t want rebellious music to give up and fade out.

Said you would never give up easy - Punk rockers weren’t willing to give up without a fight.

Get back in town I wanna paint it black - I know The Rolling Stones have a song “paint it black” but what does it mean? Maybe it means that she wants to show the darkness and evil in the world that other people aren’t pointing out because they don’t care, because they like it that way, because they’re trying to be inoffensive, etc. It could also mean that she just wants to have a good time with underground music - creating it and listening to the stuff others create.

Wanna get around - She wants to have fun. (?)

Easy living crowd so flat - People who take the easy way out and live life the easy way, the way of just going about their business and accepting whatever they’re told or whatever society wants them to think — they’re “flat” which is another way of saying boring, dull, or lifeless.

Said it all before - The things that they say, other people have said it all before.

They try to kick it, their feet fall asleep
I want to be wrong but
No one here wants to fight me like you do - This could mean two things. One, it could mean that the narrator of the song thinks that there’s no good rebellious music now, and she wants to be wrong about that because she wants there to be rebellious music. Two, it could mean that she wants the punk rockers (and other underground music) to challenge her opinions as being wrong.

I try to be so nice
Compromise
Who gets it good?
Every mighty mild seventies child
Every mighty mild seventies child
Beats me - I think that “beats me” is answering the question “Who gets it good?” meaning that she doesn’t know who gets it good when she compromises. She doesn’t feel as if she gets it good. What does she mean by “compromise”? She could mean that she tries to listen to non-controversial music. She was born in the 1970s, and the first punk rock bands emerged in the ‘70s. They’re mighty because they’re strong (strong-willed, strongly opinionated), yet they’re mild because they’re non-violent. -OR- “I try to be so nice/Compromise/Who gets it good?” could be one idea and “Every mighty mild seventies child/Every mighty mild seventies child/Beats me” could be another idea. If it’s that, it could mean that she tries to settle to listening to boring music, and she wants to know who’s happy. Then she could be saying that every seventies child who’s nonviolent (mild) and strong-willed (mighty) is happier than her (“beats me”). They’ve stayed true to themselves — they’re still “mighty” enough to resist listening to boring music, and they’re still “mild.”

How I miss your ranting - She misses the ranting of the punk rockers.
Do you miss my all time lows? - She’s asking from the point of view of punk rock fans: do the punk rockers miss the all-time lows of their fans? Some fans of punk rock most likely had depressed feelings from time to time because of their frustration about the way that society/the government is.

I think that the album gets its name (Old World Underground, Where Are You Now?) from the concept of this song.

Another thought about her vision being strained... when I said she's losing track of what she wants in life I meant that she's losing track/having a hard time remembering why she wanted to go into acting.

And when I said "fame doesn't buy happiness" I meant that being famous isn't a source of happiness for everyone. Even for people who enjoy, fame alone usually can't make people happy. Things like friendship usually make people genuinely happy.

Basically, money and fame are oftentimes overrated.

Metric – Wet Blanket Lyrics 15 years ago
I think that the guy turns other people’s opinions/beliefs/causes into fads for himself. Then he tries to control other people by forcing his fad opinions/beliefs/causes on them. He’s a negative person in general, and I think that’s the most important part of the song — a negative person who tries to control his girlfriend, and he brings everyone down. But I also think part of the song is saying that his opinions and whatnot are just a temporary thing for him; they’re not what he really believes. He just hops on some bandwagon. It’s possible that it’s also saying that he likes to control people because it makes him feel better about himself — maybe the actual controlling makes him feel good about himself, maybe seeing other people unhappy makes him happier, maybe he likes to bring other people down because he’s unhappy with himself and it’s more noticeable to him that he’s unhappy when people around him are happy. Or it could be for more than one of those reasons.

He’s a “body leech” because he sucks the joy out of people. He pretends to be kind, sensitive, and compassionate, but really he’s clenching his fist which represents his anger, his desire to control to control people especially his girlfriend, and maybe even his desire for people to jump on the same bandwagon as he did. The folk song part goes along with that. He thinks that just because he’s faking his opinions/beliefs that everyone else should want exactly what he wants and no more than that. A major part of his fake personality is that he’s all of a sudden political and devoting all of his time that he listens to music to political music (folk songs are usually or maybe always about social issues, civil rights issues, etc.). The folk song parts remind me of how some people in the “folk community” supposedly were irritated with Bob Dylan when he started writing/recording/performing songs other than just folk songs. I think part of the idea is that this guy is so controlling, but there’s more to life than just one thing. And that people should be free to be themselves, and they don’t deserve someone to be putting them down like that.

The shaker knit refers to a sweater I believe that’s probably supposed to portray that he’s pretending to be this soft, gentle, sweet, kind person — but underneath that he’s truly hard (like a brick wall) and uncompassionate. The vegetariate sing-along is like him singing along with other people’s opinions — it’s not his opinion that he’s expressing; he’s just repeating and going along with whatever he thinks is cool. The “vegetariate” part is probably him pretending to be a vegetarian or a vegan.

I think these lines describe the whole song very well “tearing her down, talking her down under your breath, making a mess, see she is happy you wanna break it”

The phony roots go along with him being fake, and the borrowed guitar gives the impression that this is just a temporary phase of his. He’s just borrowing someone’s else’s opinions until he’s over the phase of thinking that those opinions are “cool.”

Buddy Holly – That'll Be The Day Lyrics 15 years ago
"That'll be the day - when you say goodbye" He doesn't believe that she'll ever leave him.

"that'll be the day - when you make me cry" He doesn't believe that she can make him cry.

She's probably threatening that she's going to leave him and that he's going to be upset. His response is like: oh yeah right, you're never going to leave me, and if you did leave your leaving wouldn't hurt me that much.

"you say you're gonna leave - you know it's a lie cause
that'll be the day when I die"
She says that she's going to leave, but she knows that she's lying because she's not going to leave him until the day that he dies.

I could be wrong. I know some people think the song is saying that he really would cry if she left, and that her leaving would kill him inside (he would die), and that that's the reason why she wouldn't leave because she knows how much it would hurt him. Feel free to tell me your take on the song and which interpretation seems more likely to be correct in your opinion.

I agree with you that he doesn't believe she'll ever leave him.

In my opinion, the line "that'll be the day when I die" doesn't change the meaning to the opposite. I believe he's saying that the day she'll leave him will be the day that he dies - meaning that as long as he's alive she won't leave him. She'll leave him after he dies but not until he dies.

I'm not very good at explaining things, so I hope that I didn't confuse you even more.

The Wallflowers – Here He Comes (Confessions Of A Drunken Marionette) Lyrics 15 years ago
I could be completely wrong about this, but I think the "drunken marionette" is some woman's boyfriend or husband, and she treats him like crap. She uses him like a puppet/marionette and he allows himself to be used.

I think I read somewhere that Jakob Dylan said the fact that the marionette is drunken is supposed to be ironic since marionettes are generally related in our minds to young children. But does it have any other meaning? Maybe it also means that this guy is her puppet who isn't aware of what's happening - he can't see that she's treating him so badly.

L7 – The Masses Are Asses Lyrics 15 years ago
I think most of the song is self-explanatory except for this:

"Poetry's in motion, not in mind
Poetry's in motion but not in my mind
Poetic justice will come in time"

For the third line of that, you need to know the definition of poetic justice (an outcome in which vice is punished and virtue rewarded usually in a manner peculiarly or ironically appropriate). The masses (a.k.a. the asses) will be punished eventually and probably in a way that is ironically appropriate. The way they've been asses will come back to get them. The minority of people who aren't asses will be rewarded (maybe). Seeing the masses punished might be reward enough.

I'm less sure what the first two lines mean. Maybe people aren't thinking about poetry including her. People might not be thinking about it because the masses of them are asses. She might not be thinking about poetry because she's preoccupied with how the masses are asses. But even though people aren't thinking about poetry, it's still in motion, it's still happening. One definition of poetry is this: "something likened to poetry especially in beauty of expression." So maybe it's saying that things are being beautifully expressed, but people are too busy being asses or dealing with asses to notice them, and even if they do notice them, they aren't really thinking about them.

Metric – White Gold Lyrics 15 years ago
"Piss poor, riding high, sunbathing fireside
We're here for the porn or the sirloin
Get your T-bone, let your backbone slide
Tunnel and sky collide
Lose friends to the airwaves and the airlines"

I think the song is about a waitress who's working as a waitress to survive until she can make it big as an actress. Currently, she's "piss poor" but trying to live as high society of a life as she can. It's like it's all about the image/status. She's not on some beach at a fancy hotel or something - she's sunbathing by a fire. I think it's about letting go of your integrity for money and/or fame - bascially selling out and seeing your friends sell out and/or devote all of their time to their famous job.

"I want to make it right
Some future in my eyes, bright
Hush don't explain
When you water down my name
I'll be up too late
Call me when you get
Better at your game
You haven't beat me yet"

I think this might be about people trash talking famous people. But she's still strong and not backing down and not losing track of what's important to her.

"The waitress, the actress
Has got the skin and the bones
With the hairbrush and an air brush
She'd be white gold
She asked the piss poor
"Why are you looking for that party in the sky
It's just a movie about a movie, too old to die"

Actresses are touched up so that what you see isn't 100% natural beauty. It appears perfect but it's not pure (like white gold). The part of her that wants to become an actress asks the waitress in her why she’s trying to achieve this so-called happiness since “it’s just a movie” (a fake thing — a perfect appearance — appearing perfect because they’re airbrushed) “about a movie” (a fake thing — appearing to be perfectly happy but you’re just seeing publicity photos, and also no one’s life is perfectly happy), “too old to die” (the idea of famous people looking perfect and being perfectly happy is a concept that’s been around for so long that many people have a hard time getting it out of their head and realizing that this perfection isn’t real).

“You haven't beat me yet
Though my vision is strained”

I’m not sure exactly what the people or person is trying to beat her at. That’s the main thing I’m unsure about in this song. Maybe people in general are talking trash about her as I said before, but they haven’t crushed her spirit yet. The part about her vision being strained probably has something to do with losing track of what she wants in life.
