Mark Knopfler – Our Shangri-La Lyrics 14 years ago
i do i do i do !!! love 'im !!! have been for decades. i'd be so happy if i could even just . . . oh, i dunno . . . touch his elbow or something. if he spoke to me, i'd piddle. he's the best balladeer i've EVER heard, and an icon of a guitar virtuoso. "like" him? there's no word to adequate describe my admiration for him and his work. OH yeah. i like him, alright.

noooooo, tpf. aye! check out where he was in life at the time he wrote Romeo and Juliet. remember: MK's an intensely private man. he likely wouldn't say it was a love song---he'll give facts about it. re-examine Romeo and Juliet. check out his first marriage to a girl named . . . Cindy, is it? check out that period in his life when he was calling his brother's or friend's flat 'home.' dude.

ah but he DOES write love songs. what about Golden Heart? Nobody's Got the Gun? Romeo and Juliet? This is Us? and on one of his new cds there's the one about the damaged ship that's out of commission for awhile. that one has an interesting parallel with his recovery period following the hit-and-run accident where a young woman mows him down while he's riding one of his great motorcycles. fenderpaman, take the shades off your eyes. look closely for those love songs. cheers!

Mark Knopfler – Hill Farmer's Blues Lyrics 14 years ago
sounds like the fella'd had enough...as though he'd tried and tried, but he was at a loss to save his relationship with the woman he loved as 'the only one.' the kinds of things he's buying seem very practical for a farmer . . . an indication that he's going to carry on with his life while his betrayer tries to live with herself and reaps the harvest of what she's sown. and? he doesn't want her to even THINK about taking his f-a-i-t-h-f-u-l ('do you even remember what that word means, woman?') dog. wants her to stay away from the one continuing relationship he has out of the whole debacle of their marriage.

nooooooo . . . MK was reading a book about the drug culture, and the story of a specific girl/woman caught his attention. he focused on her and wrote the song with her in mind. totally not a song about his own experience.

Mark Knopfler – Monteleone Lyrics 14 years ago
oh! i read something on . . . liner notes? the web? either MK himself or someone who i recognized as being personally involved mentioned this Monteleone gentleman. said that MK went to him ever so humbly and asked if he would make a mandoline for him in honor of his eldest daughter, Isabella. the finished instrument was indeed named "The Isabella" or something like that, and, of course, it now belongs to MK.

the words about the seasons passing too quickly would seem to echo the sentiment of most parents: where do their children's young years go? they seem to fly by so quickly. they seem so fleeting.

aye, this is a warm and tender song, and i wonder if the out-of-character style of music MK chose to write for it was similar to the type of music his daughter was enjoying at the time.

precious. <3

Mark Knopfler – Imelda Lyrics 14 years ago
hmm...i've gotta consider an interview i watched wherein he said the "Imelda" reference wasn't necessarily about her specifically; rather, it was . . . and then something i didn't quite catch. but i agree there're all kinds of reasons to think exactly what you wrote, berzerk.

p.s.--are you? =0)

Mark Knopfler – Golden Heart Lyrics 14 years ago
don'tcha think its about MK's wife and true love---Kitty Aldridge? i have the impression from interviews i've watched and other such things that they share a great love of history. she's even written a book (or two?) that's about a common man and his withdrawn granddaughter. hence "shot me with a cannonball of history and long-forgotten art." they seem crazy about each other. the lyrics fit them very well.
