The Middle East – Blood Lyrics 9 years ago
I agree that this song is totally about control. Or rather, lack there of, that exists in our lives.

I found this song right after my mom was diagnosed with cancer. I had/have a very hard time dealing with the lack of control that comes with this situation. One of the last lines in the song, "and the cancer spread into her body and her blood, and there's nothing you can do about it now.." This one hit me really hard. Because its true. We have no control over many of the bad things in life. The message I got from this song. Let it go. you have no control over this situation. Be happy. Its not your fault. You'll see each other again later.

A Perfect Circle – Blue Lyrics 15 years ago
As well, maybe this meaning is not so literal. Instead of "her" literal death and turning blue being an effect of that, the blue he talks about could be her feelings. This song could be about depression. And before I go any further I know that the explanation of this song has been given by the band already, but music among many other things, I believe, is subjective, which is why so many different people like the same song. Anyway, here the singer may talk about not understanding her depression. "Best to keep things in the shallow end, bc I never learned how to swim... I just didn't want to know." When he says "such a perfect color for you....while I just sit and stare at you," I envision self reflection. Here he knows he's ignoring it and it almost pisses him off. "Call an optimist," this could just be sarcasm. And again I see him almost sitting there looking in a mirror when he says "just sit and stare at you." Here he acknowledges the fact that her depression is wearing off on him. Now having said all that, the depressing blue he talks about can be connected with the literal death because when you are that depressed (for whatever reason) you can feel dead. "Just ignore the smoke and smile," here he just tries to ignore his own problems even though they are all surrounding him...like smoke. This song is twisted in that it takes the color blue which is commonly associated with the calmness of water, and constance of surrounding (sky, ocean, etc.) and exposes its darker side. Interestingly, often in works of art light blue, which is the color of a dead body, represents innocence, and takes on an angelic side. However, dark blue becomes scary and is often associated with evil, which is why I am not sure other than the literal fact that dead bodies are blue, that he uses blue in the song.

Modest Mouse – People as Places as People Lyrics 15 years ago
This song also seems to pick up a theme that many of Modest mouse's other songs do. They seem to refer to the fact that no matter what, you never really know people, even the ones that are close you to. And in this instance that may include yourself.
"It's hard to get hold of and hard to let go always something we'd looked for from the day we were born," for me refers to finding yourself, and in that regard, what truly makes you happy with the realization that it may be impossible to be happy when you are trying to make everyone else happy. This song affirms that the coexistence of true happiness for more than one person is not possible due to human nature. The music video really shows this aspect as well, and I think that the band emphasizes this with the use of a tree as the girls boyfriend. A sort of inanimate object that defies the complexities of human nature and human life, but at the same time remains vulnerable to the dark side of it in order to highlight this impossible coexistence of happiness.
"because you're the people that I wanted to know," here I think they are talking about that idol in your life, and how ultimately we all base our lives around the goal of being just like that idol.

"...and then bark at the dog he's sniffling and whimpering for someone to know," for me refers to a deep loneliness that occurs often in life because you may find yourself ultimately lonely. Here I think the band questions why we do try to please people instead of ourselves. And they then give the answer... we don't want to be by ourselves. Why he chose a dog, perhaps because its known as the most loyal animal, it may just symbolize loyalty and how loyal we are to making others satisfied for our sake, but ultimately we lose ourselves.
