this song is written from the perspective of someone who suffers from Narcissistic Personality Disorder [NPD] [they call themselves 'narcs'], who typically have manipulative relationships with their significant others and feel that they are always entitled to attention, on a dime. they lack empathy and the ability to feel human emotion: 'Love, is this loving, babe?' they will maintain eye contact with their partner to convince them of the veracity of their claims [of love, concern for their problems etc] but it's just a studied move: But, baby, you can see that the gazing eye won't lie of course, they feel they should always be at the center of attention, and without the attention they feel helpless: Feast your eyes, I'm the only one Control me, console me again, they view emotions in a coldly detached manner, and simply replicate them in a mechanical manner: I show some love and respect [rather than actually feeling said love and respect] I have more examples, but you get the gist |

| I wouldn't call this political inconsistency, but rather political ignorance, as the song basically contradicts itself on several instances on the point it's trying to make [refer to my comment] / or, alternatively, it's ironic and the song still denotes progressivism [but I doubt it] | |

an inconsistency with the song makes me wonder if it's tongue-in-cheek: when they complain about 5%, they refer to income tax, which only affects the rich; when they make those exaggerations about stuff being taxed [street, heat, feet etc.] that's a [hypothetical] tax on consumer goods, which affect everyone. so either the song is missing the point completely, or the Beatles are satirizing the idea that the rich suffer as much as the poor [they don't]. |
