I think it's about his mother, not his girlfriend. He's thinking about how his mother has helped him through all of his tough times, but he's stuck in a self-loathing state because when he really thinks about it, he's never done anything for her but cause her grief, so he wants to cut ties so that she'll live happy and without worry.
