Regina Spektor – The Sword and the Pen Lyrics 15 years ago
Hmm... Anxiety, fear, and despair are the words that pop into my mind when I listen to this song. The many "what if"s in this song along with the "I don't wanna live without you" lead me to think that she may have been afraid for whoever/whatever this song was being written to/about. The thought of being left alone by that someone/something because something horrible may happen is leading her to a point of despair.

She used to be able to turn to her faith or poetry to console the emotions, but now the reality that is loss is swiftly winning out. She's met someone/something she desperately doesn't want to lose. Someone/something that has caused these fears to awaken just by existing in her life.

"And death from above is still a death" is a particularly powerful line for me personally, given my personal beliefs. It's almost like she's kind of condemning the idea of happiness in death. Condemning the people coming and consoling a grieving person with words of "God's plan" or heaven. She's realizing it doesn't mean crap from this side of the grave.

Then again, I may just be projecting my own feelings into the lyrics. I tend to do that. ha ha.

These are things I know about this song: 1)I feel like a jerk whenever I listen to it. 2)I tend to chuckle at myself when I listen to it. 3)I love this song.

Now as for my attempt at coming up with a meaning, there's a number of ways to take it.

I like the 1984 idea. It fits, but that's not what I think of when I listen to it. I personally take it as a dig on herself as well as others for being so dependent on machines (computers, cars, TV, music players, etc). Almost like we've started assimilating ourselves into being a part of one. We blog, we e-mail each other, facebook, twitter, surf, download and upload music, videos, and pictures; it's pretty funny when you start thinking about it, although a tad aggravating at the same time. lol

That's just my two cents on the matter though.

Regina Spektor – One More Time with Feeling Lyrics 15 years ago
I have no authority when it comes to trying to decrypt Regina Spektor's work, but I always took this as a song about someone that tried to kill him/herself. Taking the stitches out, in a hospital with a crappy light, working on getting better, and the looks of misery passed between the person and the people around them. Then again, her songs are rarely what they seem. lol. I like the upbeat sound to it mixed with what I perceive to be slightly morbid lyrics. The chorus is awesome because of the play-like atmosphere surrounding them. It can be taken at face value, as the person thinking this, or as a little break from the story.

Missy Higgins – Unbroken Lyrics 15 years ago
Kind of seems like a song about running away from your problems just to crash into more to me. The more you run away from your problems instead of dealing with them, the less likely you are to be able to move forward in life. If you face your problems head on, however, you'll find yourself standing slightly ahead of where you were ("unbroken"), even if you are a little more cynical(no longer seeing with "virgin eyes"). Personal and very broad way of looking at this song. I would try and get all "a bird isn't just a bird" on this but, screw it. I'm tired. lol.

Missy Higgins – Casuality Lyrics 15 years ago
Well aware of the feeling this song has behind it. lol. Yeah, pretty black and white as anaethetise said. Although I would personally say that it's really the fault of the person putting the pressure on her, not the ex. It sucks being stuck around someone that sees their ex or someone they're in love with (that isn't yourself) when they look at you, let alone being in a "romantic" relationship with someone like that. "'Cos all you see is a human bandage" is an excellent line for how it feels. Of course a part of you wants them to tell a bold face lie and say that you're the one they want, but no matter what they say, it's evident that they want that other person and are just using you as a substitute. Eventually somethings going to give, and when it does who's fault is it? Yours of course! Not the person that threw you into such a crappy situation. The joys of rebounds~
