The National – This Is the Last Time Lyrics 12 years ago
Is that Sharon Van Etten singing at the end - "It takes a lot of pain to pick me up?" Very cool finish to this song.

The National – Graceless Lyrics 12 years ago
I don't ascribe as deep a meaning to this as some of the others. I think the line "gone through the glass again" refers to the clumsy act of walking into a glass door as a metaphor so to speak - for doing something graceless again in his relationship that he regrets (slipping with an addiction or cheating maybe?). He wishes that he could easily take something to make his regretful act disappear, but he also realizes that there's no easy way out. Saying it's the side effects that save us means that without repercussions we'd take the easy way out (i.e., it's the side effects of the medications that keep us from addiction to them). Saying there's a "science" to walking through windows (or glass doors) without her is just a tongue in cheek of saying that, without her, it's difficult for him to act graceful. The line about "taking the medicine" is just a saying about accepting your punishment, which here is staying away from her (going missing) - and also serves as a nice play on the theme of addiction (if that's the graceless act to which he's referring). Great song! Probably my early favorite on the new album.

The Walkmen – Angela Surf City Lyrics 15 years ago
My favorite song on the new album, which is great. These guys never disappoint. Saw them with The National in Vancouver 2 weeks ago, and this song was excellent live.

Sounds like Angela kept things to herself, wouldn't communicate her feelings and he's feeling a bit of unrequited love now. Very cinematic song to me. I picture him sitting on a windy beach at night pondering this relationship...

Here are some corrections to the lyrics:

In the 2nd verse, I think it's: Still the flags snap in the wind

In the 3rd verse, it's: You kept your jaw wired closed

In the 4th verse, it's: I used to see the signs

In the 5th verse, it's: Still the whitecaps roll away

In the 6th verse, it's: Let's go home happy again

Menomena – TAOS Lyrics 15 years ago
TAOS in all caps is obviously an acronym and not about the city in new Mexico. No doubt the song is about fucking but what's the acronym? Too addicted on sex, tits and other sh*t, ...?

The Walkmen – Stranded Lyrics 15 years ago
Great song. Excited about the new album. This song seems to be about running into an old flame (for whom he still has feelings) and he's feeling alone now.
