I don't think Oberst is as into the science of it as you explicate; I think the song is really just about being and living as the matter you are. It preaches the point across that time is terrifying ("the arc of time, the stench of sex, the innocence you can't protect", which compares innocence lost in sexual encounters to the ticking clock), but we just have to have our own mindset and live out our lives as they are, and eventually, die: just like everything else, however it appears that everything else doesn't even need to worry about death, because it is all part of a cycle "the instinct of the blind insect/ who never thinks not to accept his fate/ that's faith, there's happiness in death". Knowledge is what makes a person foolish, wisdom is what makes a person prepared. |

There is so much to be said about the last three stanza's.
My favorite lyric is, "the arc of time, the stench of sex, the innocence you can't protect" Oberst just compared the loss of innocence and fear that is prominent through sex to time; the fear of time passing by us is just as terrifying as sexual encounters. Also, "the instinct of the blind insect/ who never thinks not to accept it's fate; that's faith, there's happiness in death". Which explains how humanity worries so much about death and aging and life, when something small and virtuous such as a bug doesn't even thing about it: it just is. This song is very Tao. |

the concept of "sunrise, sunset" is universal: everything starts, and everything ends. I love how Oberst includes motifs throughout this album in each song (ex: "Where are you, Arienette?"). If you haven't already, you should absolutely listen to the (fake) interview of "Conor Oberst" at the end of the song "An Attempt to Tip the Scales", it goes into detail as to what all of the motifs are and what they mean (Fevers, Mirrors, Clocks, Calendars, Time, Scales, Arienette, etc.) |

only the first three lyrics, being "sunrise, sunset/ sunrise, sunset/ swiftly go(flow) the days" are from the fiddler on the roof. |
