| CHVRCHES – The Mother We Share Lyrics | 13 years ago |

Almost everything about this song says breakup. There's talk about an obligation to side with someone in front of others and to gloss over their faults. And the phrase "We've come as we’re ever gonna get
" seems to suggest a relationship that's run its course. But then there's the eponymous lyric. It could be about the way that close groups of friends wind up dating each other in ways that wind up feeling gross and incestuous. You know, like every sitcom ever. I prefer to take it more literally. The relationships we form with siblings are like nothing else. They're easy but the're tense, supportive but competitive and they have a way of reverting us to adolescence in the best and (more often) worst ways. And that's when they're going well. I'm thankful that I've never experienced it, but some people find themselves at the end of their rope, having to cut off someone with whom they share blood. I don't know for sure if that's what the song is about, but it would be cool. |
