Lyle Lovett – Step Inside This House (Step Inside My House) Lyrics 6 years ago
Lyle Lovett truly brings this Guy Clark song to life. The singer shows a visitor his handful of treasures, each of them rife with the experiences of a well-lived and truly enjoyed life.

One of the lines — "It's funny how I love that book, And I never loved that girl" — is one of the cleverest turns of phrase I've ever heard.

Blues Traveler – Pretty Angry Lyrics 6 years ago
It's interesting hearing the band working through their feelings on the passing of Bobby Sheehan.

On one hand there's the obvious anger at his poor choices..

"And I guess I'm still pretty angry, And I don't want to be."

But on the other there's profound sense of regret and loss.

"I limped behind your race was won, But were you racing or on the run? How you enjoyed, you loved to drive, And i'm destroyed ... 'cause i'm alive."

It's the conflicting emotions that give this song its incredible poignancy.

John Hiatt – Icy Blue Heart Lyrics 11 years ago
Not many songs have a better opening line than this one. Clearly the song is about a wounded soul avoiding new love.

It also features my favorite use of falsetto. See Hiatt live to get a real taste of how powerful this song can be.

John Mellencamp – To M.G. (Wherever She May Be) Lyrics 11 years ago
If this song doesn't return you to simpler times when your high school beau was all that matters, you have no heart. And if you can't find it in yourself to look back with nostalgia and a smile, you have no head.

Great song.

Jane Siberry – Calling All Angels Lyrics 13 years ago
I first became aware of "Calling All Angels" when the six women sang it to their dead friend in "Six Feet Under." There is a sadness to this song but I think that it's ultimately life affirming. We may need help from time to time that has us calling all angels – and we may question at times if it's all worthwhile – but those vexing emotions are ultimately part of what makes it all so rewarding.

Sigur Rós – Svefn-G-Englar Lyrics 13 years ago
Isn't it wonderful to hear a piece of music that's emotionally affecting where the voice essentially acts as another instrument?

Bob Dylan – Brownsville Girl Lyrics 13 years ago
Yes, maybe it's a little overproduced but I think the background singers added an affecting touch to this Bob Dylan classic. Sam Shepard and Dylan wrote this song with a sneaky sense of humour and leave you wondering what's real and what's imagined. But one thing can't be questioned; this song hits the emotional notes to great effect.

Bob Mould – Circles Lyrics 13 years ago
"Oh you make me understand that life is too short now. (Reaching out) And we don't have the time that we had when we were younger."

Is there anything worse than watching the weeks and months and years pass by, looking back weighed down by regret? Bob Mould would say no in this amazing song.

Bodeans – Naked Lyrics 13 years ago
This catchy track is all about emotional vulnerability and trusting yourself and your partner enough to tear down the walls.

John Hiatt – Feels Like Rain Lyrics 13 years ago
A passionate, moody song that John Hiatt sings to absolute perfection

Tom Petty – The Wild One Forever Lyrics 13 years ago
My favourite Petty song too. There's a desperation to The Wild One Forever. You get the sense that he's looking back at those intense moments years later but the emotions remain fresh.
